The Zoom and Pan functions do nothing to effectively change anything about the data contained within a drawing.  I am curious why they are kept within the recorded command list.  I am also curious why they trip the change record of the drawing such that, even if pans and zooms were all that was done, the application will ask for a save confirmation.  Is this something that can be turned off?

Thanks, all.

A pan and a zoom is a change to the placement of your content in the file: not to be confused with just scrolling in a MSWord document for example.

Its a 35+year old thing that apparently will never change, just get used to it if you are not able to open your DWG files that you only want to look at as READ ONLY (or not able to use just a DWG Viewer for the task).

In OPTIONS' USER PREF tab, in the UNDO/REDO section, ensure both boxes are checked. Tap that HELP button to find out more if you are interested.

To prevent this from developing into a long discussion, before anyone posts more, be aware that it has come up several times before, and has been beat to death, so you can read all points anyone could make in the other existing discussions, as well as suggestions to lessen the undesirability.  See, for example, >here< and [not so long] >this<.

Right, I'm not trying to express major frustrations, or even begin a dialog along that path.  That just becomes a flame war.  I am just interested in the actual reason, because there might actually be one, or several.  I've had my frustrations and done my fair share of honking, but it never really helps.  Forums tend to be useful as long as you can drill down quickly to the information you are hunting, without the flames.

Unless some messages got deleted that I missed, no one is "flaming" anyone around here. Read without passion, no one is writing that way so far, this is a forum for information/insights sharing and a bit of history where needed.

If you want to read more about your query, see the extra links Kent shared with you in the reply after mine.

If you'd like to offer your suggestion to Autodesk you can do so here https://www.autodesk.com/company/contact-us/product-feedback

That's not something the vast majority of users would know. Maybe it was a decision that was made by the programmers at the onset of realtime pan and zoom or it's just the nature of the beast. I usually look for the reasons "Why?" because it helps me to understand and remember things. This is one of those things that I've just accepted without reason. Revit does not work the same way and when I started using Revit, I was much more careful with undos because I didn't see my work going backwards, I had to trust my memory.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.
