NVIDIA GeForce 2050 (mobile) and AutoCAD

I'm looking at getting a laptop that can run AutoCAD without issues, particularly graphics issues which AutoCAD tends to be so finicky with.  My current graphics cards listed in my signature run AutoCAD without issues and – at least on paper – this card seems to be in line with those.  But drivers and compatibility with AutoCAD is my main concern.

I'm looking at this HP model, which is using a non-Autodesk-certified discrete graphics card:
https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-probook-460-16-inch-g11-notebook-pc-p-a3rg1ua-aba-1

HP ProBook 460, 16" G11 with NVIDIA GeForce 2050 4GB graphics. The other specs are sufficient for my needs.

Has anyone here used this graphics card with AutoCAD?  Any issues?  I'll be using it with AutoCAD 2022.

How do you use AutoCAD2022? 2D simple drafting tools, or do you design geo-referenced fully rendered tower blocks or solar farms? or...? That's about as important to know as everything else.

Almost all laptops sold as 'mobile workstations' or labelled as "PRO" my their respective manufacturers would be perfect for AutoCAD. Are you never EVER planning of moving beyond AutoCAD2022? three versions back now so brand new hardware (and OS) will always pose a possibly challenge.

You can help yourself by checking video cards/driver compatibility yourself right here, if it's not there it was not tested by Autodesk, which means it may or may not be viable (but you can email them to ask too)

Hi, Dean, glad to see you still as active as ever on the forums.

I should have mentioned in my initial post that this is not listed as a supported card for AutoCAD.  However, as you know, many cards that are not officially supported still work fine.

I'll be doing 2D work and my main concern is that it render the linework correctly without unusual artifacts or glitches that even official, supposedly supported cards sometimes have.  I want to be able to be able to use Hardware Acceleration with 2D Display Settings in Advanced Mode.  The main point of my post was if anyone had used this card specifically and if they had any issues with it.

Yes, I'm stuck on AutoCAD 2022 as Autodesk no longer offers perpetual upgrades from that version.  AutoCAD 2022 is supposed to work on Windows 11, but if not, the HP rep told me I would be able to get a "downgrade" to Windows 10 Pro included in my purchase.  Once my software is no longer able to run AutoCAD 2022, then I'll look at renting the software, or better yet, retiring. 😀

Thanks for sharing that information @nrz13

"...I'll be doing 2D work and my main concern is that it render the linework correctly without unusual artifacts or glitches..."

While there are never any guarantees in life (and computers), I would be very surprised if your chosen laptop gave you any display issues in a fully updated AutoCAD 2022.1.5 software package in Windows11 (Win10 is being forcibly retired by Microsoft in Oct 2025).

Change your original post's title and ad the make/model of the laptop, it might get more eyeballs than the one you have now.

AutoCAD 2022.1.3 was the last version that showed up for me before AutoCAD got rid of the Classic View interace.  In the redesigned Autodesk Account interface, nothing shows up anymore and Classic View has now been disabled (just redirects to an unhelpful AI chat instead).

I can't find the download for the patches anywhere either.  Would you be able to share the 2022.1.4 and 2022.1.5 updater files if you're able to see them on your end, or share a download link if they are indeed buried somewhere on Autodesk's website?  Or instruct of a way to download the patch through the software?  It's obviously not pirating since it's just a patch for the full, licensed version I have already paid for and continue to own.

Re: changing the title, I'm most concerned with that particular graphics card, as the graphics card is the only hiccup I've ever had with hardware incompatibility and AutoCAD.  So I don't care what make and model laptop someone has as long as they have the GeForce 2050 and have used it with AutoCAD.

Thanks for your response!

As far as I know you can access to any updates you can find here as a non-subscription user

https://manage.autodesk.com/home

or

https://manage.autodesk.com/cep/#products-services/all

If Autodesk limited or pulled them from your Account that is registered for your 2022 seat, you'll have to ask Autodesk or a reseller in your region for those updates. I suspect I'm not allowed as a subscriber to provide you with them.

Classic Workspace? We've all been able to recreate that in under a minute (as long as you know what to do): lots of posts on the web on how to do it, the 2022 CUIx file still has all of that content intact.

The second link appears to have forced the Classic View (this is what Autodesk calls the old view in your Autodesk Account and has nothing to do with the Classic Workspace in the program).  However, when I went to the Updates & Add-Ons tab, there was only a hotfix for Mac, object enablers for Windows, language packs, and licensing service updates for Windows, Mac, and Linux.  None of the hotfixes for Windows were included there, even ones I had downloaded previously.

My reseller directed me to Autodesk, who I reached out to, but have not received a response from yet.

I think I may have had to reach out to Autodesk directly last time to get the 2022.1.3 update that I have.

@pendean

Autodesk got back to me with the security patch downloads so I'm set there.  Thanks for letting me know about those.

I went ahead and ordered the laptop while it was still on sale for half off, so I'll report my findings here once I get it and have had a chance to set it up and install AutoCAD.

Yeah, it seemed incredible to me.  It looks like it's on sale again now for $1,199 ($100 less than I paid).  Not sure if their website is having issues or if I've just bought a huge lemon they're trying to offload! 😆

I haven't done extensive testing, but the NVIDIA GeForce 2050 (mobile version) appears to work fine with AutoCAD 2022.1.5 on Windows 11 Pro.  Linework is crisp and smooth without artifacts and handles my more intense elevation drawings with a lot of hatches comparably to my AMD Radeon Pro WX 5100 and NVIDIA Quadro P2200 cards.  The system handles some old 3D models I did years ago fine, which range from 40MB to 90MB in file size.

Windows 11 has progressed very nicely since I experimented with it a couple of years ago.  They finally added the Taskbar options back that existed in previous versions to make the Taskbar functional again.  And the full (right-click) context menu has been restored, albeit with an extra button press.  They still haven't brought back the option to turn off the giant toolbar in File Explorer, but hopefully that will come in time.  So I'll be keeping Windows 11 and maybe upgrading some other computers to it.
