Nested XREF Not Showing when Main XREF Clipped

We just moved up to 2019 at my office and I've noticed that many of my design layouts were missing most of the linework. I found that the linework that went missing were found in nested XREFs of the attached XREF, but only if the main attached XREF has a clip applied to it.

The nested XREF in question is attached, not overlaid to the main XREF of the host file.

Is this a known issues with a known fix or do I have to attach it directly to the host file instead of as a nested XREF so that I can still XREF Clip it when needed?

Hi @ArchD,

I haven't noticed this behavior but I will test on my side to see if I can duplicate the behavior. In the mean time can you provide a few sample drawing that have this behavior?  I did some looking and found another case where the customer voice a similar situation but it was resolved after using AUDIT and PURGE.

{edit] I just tried this in 2019 and I was unable to duplicate this behavior. I am hoping you can share some files.

Yeah, this is odd. It seems like this is an isolated issue to this project. I can not recreate it, even if I try recreating it in 2017, then opening it 2019 as with this project.

Unfortunately this problem nested reference also contains a surface that I do not have the time to recreate in a fresh drawing at the moment. I'll just have to deal with it until I get the time to recreate it in a fresh drawing.

Thanks for your help anyway. It's always appreciated.

Hi @ArchD,

Can you share the files with me privately so i can take a quick look? If so, please email to john.vellek@autodesk.com and include a link to this thread.

One question from me: Can you be shure that this "clip" was created by yourself?
In what version(2017? C3D?)?
In which file format was the drawing saved since the clipping, only 2013 (civil 2013 format?)?
I am asking because i had multiple support cases in the newer past with dwg's which created by archicad and that dwgs include a clipped block.
In 2019, perhaps 2018 have some trouble with that files (possible it is a problem with dwgs from other software too).

I am sure that I created the clip in Civil 3D 2017 (2013 format) because I clip it to the viewport which allows space for structure and pipe tables. After moving to 2019 I noticed this happening to all the xrefs that are clipped, so I resaved all drawings to 2019 format hoping that might help but still does not.

I can even start a new drawing, xref the base in with the nested xref and create a new clip and the nested xref vanishes. But again, it's only on this already established project. New projects do not seem to have this same issue.

So somehow my Layer 0 ended up getting frozen from moving from 2017 to 2019 for this projects drawings. Not sure if it was something I did or one of those weird quirks of AutoCAD or not, but most likely user error. Thanks guys. Now I have to figure out why my pipe network inverts are all over the place.

It depends whether you are using an OVERLAY or ATTACHED xref. If layers are disappearing when clipped, it is likely because that is how it is in the base file. If you are going to use a clip and have layers frozen and hidden, you will likely want to use an ATTACHED xref.
