NAVWHEEL Issues While Working Remotely

This week I have become very familiar with the fact that the key combination "SHIFT+W" brings up the NAVWHEEL and this is a hardwired command in AutoCAD that cannot be changed. This has never caused any problems in the past as I rarely see the NAVWHEEL pop up while working. This week, however, I am working remotely and this has become a nuisance.

In my field, almost all text on a drawing is written in all caps. Therefore, I often have CAPS LOCK on. When I'm in the office, typing a CAPS LOCK "W" in the command line displays a "W". Since I've been working from home, however, whenever I type a CAPS LOCK W in the command line the NAVWHEEL pops up. This happens if I am trying to type a command such as WBLOCK or WEED, or if I am typing an option within another command, such as W for Window Select. I spoke with someone working in my office and had them run a test. When they typed a CAPS LOCK W they just got a W. Nothing else.

What I suspect is happening is that RemotePC, the program I am using to connect to my office machine, is converting all my CAPS LOCK letters and sending SHIFT+[letter] codes to the remote computer.  Has anyone else seen this behavior? If so, were you able to correct it (other than turning CAPS LOCK off)?

Hi,

Have you tried connecting a keyboard to your laptop and then test it?

Does it happen with other apps as well?

what happens when you have the caps lock off and you type in "w" for WBLOCK. Does it open up NAVSWHEEL?

You could also have the caps locks off and then type the letters in the capital by turning on "all caps" on the MTEXT editor.

Thanks for your response.

I am on a desktop computer, not a laptop, so I am already using a standard keyboard.

A lower case "w" does not cause a problem and responds as you would expect, just typing a w in the command line. (To clarify, this only happens in commands. If I am working in a text box, the CAPS LOCK W types a "W" without bringing up the NAVWHEEL.)

I have already started using the "all caps" option in an attempt to limit having the CAPS LOCK engaged.

The only thing I have not tested is duplicating the issue in other applications. I'm not even sure the best way to test this, as I don't know of another application that uses SHIFT+W for anything other than typing a capital W. I tried to create a shortcut in my word proccesor, but SHIFT+[any letter] is not available for keyboard shortcuts.

Oddly, when I looked this up I discovered my results (2018 C3D) were the opposite!

lower case w brings up NAVWHEEL, whereas an upper case W brings up the usual command list.

Thanks, Autodesk!
