my cursor will only allow me to create a rectangle box, not click on any object

I'm very new to AutoCad.  (Only days in)  I have an existing drawing that I am using.  I created a layer to mark flooring in the rooms.  Someone was trying to help me and I think he changed a setting somewhere.  I am almost done this layer, but tried to click on a hatch I did so I can change the color, but my cursor will not highlight anything now.  It only gives the the message to 'Specify opposite corner'

Maybe you are in paper space and the drawing objects are in model space?  If unsure type MSPACE and enter and then try to select objects again.  If that's not it try posting a screen shot of your problem.
