Multiple Sessions issues

Just merely posting this for feedback to expand our userbase pool and track down if it's our software setup or machines... Our department here has split opinions on using different AutoCAD sessions per monitor vs. utilizing the tab-switching per drawing in one session.  Mixed results on stability so far, but we also strip out the basics and customize our user profiles to take advantage of routines, menu systems and other company specific drawing functions.

I personally don't condone use of multiple sessions as it can make error catching a pain, but if any of the community has some thoughts/experiences here's a place to put it.

Hi @Anonymous,

This is an interesting question and i am sorry no one else has yet jumped into the discussion. I can see the advantage of running separate sessions for multiple displays and for crash possibilities. I must say however that I find running a single session more convenient for my needs.  Without seeing all of your customizations it is hard to say what impact that might have on this (if any).

I suggest that you run some performance monitoring to see if you see any serious impact either way. Then, if the difference is negligible, let users run their own preference on their workstations.

I run multiple sessions all the time.

Mostly one Autocad 2018 (sometimes twice) and one civil 3D 2018 session (another (client) license though).

Or is civil 3D not to be seen as a second session?

Combined with open sessions of Revit (a lot of the time 2 sessions) and Navisworks.

My private Laptop is running extremely good and stability is great!

The workstation my client is providing is running with a lot less stability but this is due to installed software I can't control (I guess).

Some thoughts:

- In some licensing scenarios that shows as two licenses used, which might have cost or availability implications

- If the sessions have different settings, most recently used -lists etc. stored in registry, the last one closed wins in the next start.

- running two different AutoCAD versions at the same time will possibly confuse printer settings etc.

No problems with my printer settings but like you say, it is sometimes frustrating if you want to open plain Autocad and Civil opens instead when you double click on a file.

Thanks for the feedback John, any little bit helps.  Will keep those ideas in mind and try out some updated strategies when it comes down to it - response is appreciated!

@john.vellek

I know I'm a little late to the party, but was there ever a fix to running to multiple sessions of Civil 3d at once?

I am updating/combining a survey with more survey data that was not labeled as such. When running one sessions and switching from drawing to drawing the lag time is cutting down on my productivity by a great deal and sometimes crashes while switching. My file size is close to 12mb.'s and growing so I tried running 2 sessions that way I can turn the layers off as I confirm to information is updated in my master survey. After a while of running both sessions, my original session will start to let me select lines, blocks, etc. and it not showing that anything is selected in the properties.

Question 1: Is there a fix to the selection issue?

Question 2: Is there an easier way to combine survey data that I just don't know about...? Can you share a link or video tutorial series?

I am steadily expanding my knowledge everyday, but I know there are much easier ways to do things and multiple ways.

Thank you for your help,

Mickey

Always launch your sessions separately. Start one say from the task bar icon. Start the second through start menu app. sounds crazy but I run two session and have never had trouble.

I have ran multiple sessions for years, lunch each separately. I open one with the icon on the task bar or the desktop or whatever and 1 from start menu app. I never have any trouble.
