I would suggest you to use the layer manager for merging multiple layerssince you have a search box with wildcard support and also you could sort layers with layer name color etc.

Hi thanks, but try to do the same with +1k layers.... they will not be sorted alphabetically and it is impossible to find them

If you try, you will find it is possible.

Hi thanks, but try this:

Create +1k layers with random names and try to find 2 layers to merge them; now, how easy it would be it you just could select 2 (or more) layers , right click, and have the option of "merge" (which is different to "merge layers to").

If you try, you will find it is practically impossible.

That's not what you asked and this doesn't make sense. You need to select the layers to merge and then select the layer you want to merge to. Not using random layer names and instead have a logical naming convention will help you organize your layers. Organization will help you to easily find your layers.

Hi, thanks for your reply

"That's not what you asked and this doesn't make sense."

(?) - Relax, You are replying to a different scenario. I am talking about an issue when you have +1k layers. Everyone is sending screenshots about "merge layers to" command -with I know- but with only 4 or 20 layers.... replicate the issue with 1k layers and you will see the problem

"You need to select the layers to merge and then select the layer you want to merge to. Not using random layer names and instead have a logical naming convention will help you organize your layers. Organization will help you to easily find your layers."

(?) - This is not an organization issue. When I said "Create +1k layers with random names" was just to say "create 1k layers with ANY name" (just replicate this scenario if you want to see the issue), then use the "merge layers to" command (which I know) and you will notice that the layers are not alphabetically sorted.

Not perhaps under default settings, BUT unless you have more than 32767 Layers:

MAXSORT (System Variable)

Sets the maximum number of items such as file names, layer names, and block names that are sorted alphabetically in dialog boxes, drop-down lists, and palettes.

Type: Integer
Saved in: Registry
Initial value: 1000

If the total number of items, also called named objects, exceeds this value, no items are sorted.

The value of MAXSORT is an integer between 0 and 32767.

Again, you did not state that is your issue. Have you looked into the MAXSORT variable? The default value is 1000.

Hi there, many thanks. This will help at the moment and I accepted this as a solution for a different post, BUT, I still would like to merge the layers bypassing the next window after pressing "merge layers to" . What I am trying to do is merge them just selecting them (avoiding the process of going to ANOTHER window to select another or a "dummy" layer -which was what I was doing before your tip about "Maxsort"). Sorting the layers will help, but I need to avoid the fact of open ANOTHER WINDOW to select the "layers to" be merged.

Note: After solving this, I would like to be able to select 2 (or more) elements in model space and then merge the layers in which they are contained (not researched this at the moment, so did not formally ask)

Because that was not part of the primary question of this post.

If you read the title of this post, the idea was to Merge Layers (selecting them using control button and then right click) - I did not mention a secondary window -which is part of the current command, which I hate- or any other options , JUST "Merge Layers (selecting them using control button and then right click)"

IMO, I think that the "merge layers to" is redundant.... the command should be "merge layers"

So AutoCAD is supposed to just guess as to what the final layer should be?

LAYMRG

Thanks Rob, works fine "for 2" not good "for more (than 2). Because only accepts individual selection (no rectangular selection area available i.e)

Note: Again, the question was open to figure out if I was incorrectly using the command, I (think that) I know how to use LAYMRG (to manage 2 objects) but I am still trying to figure out a quick/simple way  to solve the "more than 2" part of the original question.

Cheers!

Now we are talking 😉

If that is the issue, the command should be “merge layers” and the secondary window should ask for which of the selected layers is the “new main layer”

I do not need to a list of 1k layers -again- if I selected 4 or 20 layers to be merged..

Now we are reaching the final question of the serie,  it is possible to merge all the layers in a drawing into one layer BUT keeping the individual VP overrides in all the layouts and viewports?

I'm out.

When you figure out how to describe exactly what you want to do, someone might be able to help you.

Again, how are you pretending to help if you are not even able to replicate the problem? Thanks for leaving this conversation clean to try to find a solution, cheers
