Materials and saving

Materials and saving

Does anyone have a real solution to the tremendous bugs that AutoCAD has with materials - other then not using AutoCAD or materials?

When you apply materials, save, close and reopen - the materials will randomly disappear, so you have to repeatedly re-assign them to objects.

I have some dwgs where they miraculously stay put and I use blocks and the design center to use "redefine only" to reapply, and reapply and reapply... every time I open another dwg (where random object changes have happened during save or open).... even if those files are save-as variants of the ones where the materials stay put.

This is getting tremendously tedious, so does anyone have any real solutions (except dropping this unsupported bugfest and going to another firm that doesn't charge for software they don't really support or develop anymore.).

Scripts to redefine all blocks upon open would do (but I have had no luck in making one myself; sorting through the blocks collection I can manage - but I have no idea how to (v)lisp material properties (just like Autodesk apparently :cara_con_la_lengua_fuera: ).)

Using AutoCAD 2018 (but same results in any previous version that "supports" the material lib) on 64 bit with NVIDEA GTX960M.

I am sorry if that sounded kinda snooty, but the only replies I've gotten from Autodesk over the years are attempts to sell their other software.

The example files: 1 (BB002100) is a save-as from the other (BB002000) where I've deleted some objects and added some text... close... open... materials gone.

Hi @Anonymous,

Can you give me some more detail regarding the materials disappearing?  I looked at your files but I have no idea which materials I should be looking at.

Can you describe the type of materials and how they are applied (by layer, by object)?  Are they assigned to objects, made into blocks and then they disappear?

I would like to find out what is happening and see if there is anything I can provide to help.

Please also tell me your version of AutoCAD.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

3D solids in blocks have been assigned materials in acad 2018 through the matbrowser and/or the properties tab.

As I said in the other post, 1 of the files in a modification (save-as) of the other - basically a lot of objects have been deleted and some texts changed.

Upon save>close>open randomly some objects just lose their assigned material (from the autodesk lib).

Easiest way to see this is in the NL(C) layout - where no object should be displayed in an "autocad color".

I currently have about 30 of these files and only in some cases the materials stay put, and having to redefine the blocks on each before being able to work on them is rather tiresome - because this is basically just a bug.

(not as bad as the bug autocad has where if you have multiple camera's, delete one and try to rename another to the name of the one you deleted - fatal error)

(about as bad as the bug where the modelspace UCS is suddenly changing because you  have been in a 3d viewport in paperspace, so you need to reset UCS>W every time you check a view.)

I was having the same problem and i might have found a loophole:
I attempted reinstalling even years later on some ample project that uses a lot of 3d solids, so thought id open the issue at hand. On autocad 2024 or 2023 it seems to have issues sometimes with historical solids(i got no mere idea what that is its just an error ive read) and it works with applying the material from the properties panel on multiple selected faces rather than selecting the faces and clicking the material in it's primary menu.

I have no clue as to why it works if put like that but it seems like a retainability issue with the materials if they arent set from the properties, as if it would not trigger the property change from Material - By Layer to whatever material you got to that face, and it might intuitively be hand in hand with the load the projects uses and the pc the project is modified on, since ive started having the issue after developing a dj controller soundboard quite far to the extent that im missing only a few materials on faces which until now they have worked perfectly in applying to said faces. Hope this helped even with the older topic and the recurring forum issue i've seen so far.

I am having this issue and it's a major problem - with both 2023 and 2024.

We develop assemblies in some drawings and then bring those into a master drawing as dynamic blocks.
They work fine when first imported, but then most (not all) material assignments appear to be lost.

Using design center and redefining the blocks from the original drawing restores the materials, at least for the current session.

No idea how to troubleshoot this one!
