malfunctioning F1 key as O-Snap (override Help)

I have been using AutoCAD for about the last 14 years with the Function keys overridden for different O-Snap functions.

  • F1 is now for Endpoint
  • F2 is for intersection
  • F3 is nearest point
  • F4 is perpendicular
  • (F8 I left as ortho on/off though)

Often however, AutoCAD seems to „forget“ that F1 has an override so when used for an intended Endpoint o-snap, it opens up help, which is very very annoying. This has happened in every version of AutoCAD in this time frame, if i remember correctly. Not just to me either, but to colleagues and others around the world. In searching for a fix I stumbled upon a few suggested fixes, but none seem to work!

I’ve tried renaming and deleting the helppane.exe, to no avail.

I tried unchecking the box in Options > System Tab > Access Online Help When Available, also no luck.

Other than AVOIDING the problem by reassigning the F-Keys so that endpoint is now perhaps F11 instead of F1, does anyone have a fix for me?

So you're saying that at some point, F1 is executing the 'endp transparent osnap, then it just reverts to its default call to HELP?

Does this happen in the middle or a drawing session, or after a new launch?

Do the other F key reassignments still work after F1 stops working for 'endp ?

Exactly that.

all the other F-Key overrides (Transparent O-Snaps) that I've assigned work fine, it's just F1 that (often) malfunctions!

After starting a new line from a free point to the end of another line (or node of another polyline), I want to be able to press F1 to get my Endpoint-Osnap activated, so that AutoCAD doesn't let me accidently pick a different snap point (in case there were also midpoints, intersections, centre points etc all within close proximity of the single Endpoint that I was aiming at). Upon pressing F1, even though I've assigned it to endpoint in the CUI, up pops the help window, killing 5 seconds until i get it closed. AutoCAD however has then subsequently activated the endpoint osnap, so it looks like it's not forgotten the CUI override, but rather just forgotten to ignore the original assignment of F1 (help), so it does both.

PS: It happens in both new and old drawings, in freshly opened and longer opened sessions, with AutoCAD versions 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018 and now 2020.

the CUI is how i got to override the F-Keys / assign them new functions in the first place.

I basically just want AutoCAD's help to go away. Forever. Whenever I actually NEED help, I google the problem anyway, so I wouldn't miss the help feature at all!

What is common between your versions 2012 through 2020 for hardware, OS, keyboard etc.?

F1 is Windows default HELP button in all programs. If it's been happening to you in versions between 2012 through 2020 perhaps it is time to just skip over F1 and try something else in the interim?

Only the operating system has been constant (windows, but even then I've gone from Windows 2000 up to Windows 10 and always had the problem)
Hardware has frequently changed, also changed company.
I'm not giving up just yet!

@barry2104  - Are you defining those F-key keyboard shortcuts in the main CUI file? What I've been doing for years is doing those assignments in a partial menu. Having said that we did stop using F1 years ago when migrating from MNU files to CUI.

But I believe we did that so that we didn't stomp on the default HELP key, not because it wasn't working.

yes, assigning them in the main CUI dialogue, as described here

Not sure what you mean by "partial menu"...

I mean, define them in a partial menu. This way your customizations live it a separate file which can be loaded on top of any main menu. You never have to worry about migrating that content to a new PC or new version of ACAD, etc.

I too have been using F1 key for endpoint for years.  I had no problems until 2019 release or perhaps 2018.  What I do is let Help pop up, minimize it on my second screen by dragging the corner of the window and go on about my work.  I have searched for a solution myself and never found one, and I have my function keys defined in a partial customization file.  Even if I close the Help window the F1 = endp will work fine for a while and then will once again it will start opening the Help window.

I like the idea to simply move the help window offscreen! That seems to be the best patchwork solution yet.

Cheers!
