see http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/AutoCAD...

Basically OTF fonts based on Postscript outlines are nit supoorted, only OTF fonts based on TTF outlines are going to work.

before converting to shx, you might want to look into either using a supported font, and at least check into the license agreement for the OTF you want to use.

What worked for me was creating sub-folders for each font file type separately. So I have c:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2018\Fonts\otf, then shx and ttf.

What worked for me was:

  1. Convert the .otf file to .ttf using https://www.files-conversion.com/font-converter.php
  2. Put the .ttf file in the Acad fond folder:C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2018\Fonts
  3. Install the .ttf file to windows fonts. Here is how: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Some-Tru...

Hi, I followed the four steps you listed, and now have the font I want in my windows fonts, but I still am unable to load it in AutoCAD. how do I get it as a shx file so that I can load it?

Rename from ttf to shx

That will not work.  The nature of the contained information is entirely different between the two file types.  It would be like renaming an AutoCAD .DWG file to .PDF and expecting to open it with a .PDF file reader.  That's why you get this kind of warning:

And this when you try to open it:

AutoCAD primarily uses .shx (shapefile) and .ttf (TrueType font) files for text display.
