Losing work in AutoCAD 218

We've been switching to AutoCAD 2018 over the last couple of months. On more than one occasion we've had work get lost. By that I mean that the dwg is edited and when later re-opened the work is gone. Interestingly we figured out this last time that after editing a bunch of files, the .dwg date & time did not change but the .bak files were newer in time.

We're not sure if we should be looking to AutoCAD or our server as the culprit. Has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks,

Randy

Hi,

>> the .dwg date & time did not change but the .bak files were newer in time.

And when you rename the BAK file to X.DWG and open this file ... does that contain what you are missing in your original file?

Randy, good day.

Within the default autocad options, not only in the 2018 version, you have values that you must change so that it does not happen (I still wonder why?), But it is about changing a value.

In the Options window (OP command), Open and Save tab, change the default value from 50 to 100, each time you save your entire work will remain. (Point 1)

Below, as a precaution, check Automatic Save (10 minutes is good time) for an automatic save, be aware that this saved is not done on the file or in the location where you are working but in a temporary folder and with another type of extension.

And, check also BackUP that will create a file of identical name and of similar size to the one that you are using but with extension .bak, this file changes or it is overwritten every time that you use save. In case some vex your .deg is damaged or lost, you have this backup so you do not lose your job, so if it becomes habit to save frequently ... much better. (point 2)

And finally, if the bak does not retrieve what you need, you'll have to resort to the .ac $ times that you will not save more than half for the very low percentage of saving.

It is not normal for autocad to close frequently, unless it is the file you are working on that generates, it may be defective or it could be damaged, however, although it closes unexpectedly, you should save much more than you say if you do the settings.

I hope I have been of help, if you need anything else I will be attentive.

Regards,

Johanna Esteban

@Flatpicker hello, in addition to that you need to change from options the "file extension for temporary files" from .AC$ to .SV$ for autosave backup and change to .DWG to becone Autocad drawing. thanks

That should be a 0 (zero), not 100.

Thanks everyone. Yes, we were able to recover the lost work via bak files.  A little more information, the drawings are not crashing and it is seemingly random. We all use autosave, can you tell me how the file extension change for the autosave would make a difference?

We're going to set our incremental save to 0 for a full save. We can't reproduce the problem at will so time will tell. Our IT guy is also looking at some server issues with latency and anti-virus that we suspect as well.

Thanks, I've read that article and it mostly reinforced what I already knew about autosave and temporary files.

My question is in regard to ennujozlagam's suggestion to change the temporary save file extension from ac$ to sv$ in the open & save options.

Hi,

>> Yes, we were able to recover the lost work via bak files

I would now check the permissions of the users, maybe they don't have all permissions, so rename from dwg to bak works, but creating a dwg fails or something like that.

Also an antivirus software might block actions like renaming or saving. That can be tested by configuring file extensions to not be scanned/blocked (*.DWG, *.BAK, *.DWL, *.DW2, *.DWK, *.SV$, *.AC$)

Is this a WIndows OS Server, or a NAS< or a cloud-based server that you all save your files to?

It is appearing that the cause is due to sharing a few jobs that we share between offices. Each office has a local server and when necessary we sync a project with spideroak. It has worked great for years but is appearing to have problems with the latest updates. We're phasing out spideroak anyway so the problem seems to be solved.

Thanks again everyone.
