.lin file continues to disappear

Hello All,

I continue to have an issue with .lin file. It will disappear leaving me with only two choices of lines. Does anyone know where I can get another .lin file and any thoughts on why this keeps happening?

Regards,

Shane

Hi,

hard to understand (for me) what you tried to say .

Please tell us more or in other words,

share Screenshots if possible.

>>".lin file continues to disappear"

disapper? You mean you going to the *.lin folder by windows explorer and both files are deleted or move?

>>"It will disappear leaving me with only two choices of lines."

Where do you looking, share a screenshot of whole(!) program window incl. the dialog you're talking about.

>>"Does anyone know where I can get another .lin file and any thoughts on why this keeps happening?"

Never heard, or didn't understood, sorry

Ask your admin about this issue.

Ditto the response/questions asked by @cadffm  - we need more info.

Files just don't disappear on their own.

Perhaps you are not aware that linetypes are a per-DWG file thing, you only see linetypes someone load in that one DWG file, the entire list of choices are not automagically loaded in each and every DWG file?

Apologizes to all. When I start a new drawing I cannot add new line example hidden. This happened a year ago and is has come back after my last upgrade. The last time I had a technician from the help desk load it again.

The last time he placed it in

  • C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2021\R24.0\enu\Support

The file was there for a year after the update it is gone and I can no longer add any new line types. If I am doing something wrong please let me know you thoughts.

Thank you for your time and input.

@Anonymous your ACAD.LIN file should always be located in a folder that is listed or has been added by someone (that can always be you that does it) here in OPTIONS command's FILES tab, the very first list

Is this a custom ACAD.LIN file or just the stock file and content?

Thank you for the note Pendean what was loaded was the standard file. I have searched the program same as last time without luck. I cannot add any of the normal line types to a new drawing. So no dashes for hidden, center, border etc. The last time the help desk had to do it but for some reason they will not allow me to submit a ticket to have it done again.

My admin is less than helpful. They told me to call Autodesk same as last time. I know it sounds crazy but the last time the file had just disappeared.

A common thought, but not true. The only thing that must be in the support file search path is the shape file (.shx) for shape file based complex linetypes. But LIN files can live anywhere, you could even delete them after loading the linetypes with no problem.

This is because LIN files are simply referenced at the time of linetype loading, and never referenced again until you go to load more, or reload the same. Linetypes live in the DWG file @Anonymous - so equip your template files with the desired linetypes and you'll never have to load them again.

@Anonymous - search your entire hard drive for any .LIN files. If nothing, do you have any co-workers that would have the .LIN file(s)? If not, then grab a DWG file that does have the desired linetypes loaded and use DesignCenter to copy them from the "good" drawing, into the "linetypeless" drawing.

Copy them into your template files and you won't have to worry about loading them again.

Lastly, if you feel that you must have a .LIN file, go here and grab this lisp file to export the linetypes from a DWG file to a .LIN file.

@Anonymous Not sure what you do with every new installation to break a stock default feature like that where someone at Autodesk Support have to repath it for you, but all of us can get to all the stock LIN and PAT files etc. at this location on our PCs if we ever need access to then (x denotes your current AutoCAD version number)

C:\users\YOURNAMEHERE\appdata\roaming\autodesk\autocad 202x\r2x.0\enu\support

And that folder listing above should already be in the FILES's tab in OPTIONS command inside the top list.

A reinstall of your AutoCAD version would fix it too, until you all break it somehow with something else.

Thank you everyone for the help. I will ask a friend if he can send me a drawing will all of the common ones saved. I will use it as a new template. Just seems odd that it has disappeared each time I have an update. Even the technician could not figure out where it went or why.
