Layer - Cannot make current

I'm having an issue where I try to select multiple objects (lines for example) and use the layer dropdown to put them on a different layer (that happens to be frozen). I get a message that says "The selected layer cannot be made current".  I don't understand because it's not like I'm trying to change the current layer.  I'm only trying to put selected objects on a layer..

By the way, if I only select one object (a single line), it works fine!  Very frustrating

It happens rarely but noticeably often with one or dozens of objects here too: your click is read as a request to make the layer active.

Are you saying to happens to you ALL the time, always, never ever a variation, an din all files not just this one? if yes, what if your AutoCAD version/variant and what is your Windows version.

Check PICKFIRST. Set it to 1.

PICKADD variable if it's multiple and not single objects.

PICKADD  was set to 2.  Tried to set it to 1 and the same thing happens.

That will only happen when AutoCAD looses the selectionset before changing the layer, as shown below.

You are certain that PICKFIRST is set to 1? What happens when you select entities and just move to a thawed layer? If they still do not move and simply change the current layer then somehow the selectionset is lost. Test on a different drawing or restart CAD. Try on different workstation. Sometimes the mouse may need updated drivers or even replacing the mouse itself.

thanks for the video!  that message is exactly what I get except that I already have PICKFIRST set to 1.  i feel like you're close to a solution as you're able to replicate the issue.  I tried to restart AutoCAD and same thing happens.  Will try to restart my CPU now...

Did you use any ADD-ON app?

What happens when you use the PROPERTIES window? It works for me even while PICKFIRST is set to 0.Moving_objects_2_frozen_layer_2.gif

Weird. I'm able to select several lines at once and move them to a frozen layer via the properties window like normal. Just get the usual message that they're moved to a frozen layer. But for some reason, when I do the same thing but use the layer dropdown, it thinks I want to make the frozen layer current...

Can you actually see your selections get deselected as shown in the video above?

What mouse and mouse driver are you using?

That does not make sense. Based on what you have described so far, the selectionset is lost when using the layers panel but it is not lost when using the properties palette? You may want to post a screencast so members better understand the problem. Go here to upload a screencast.

I agree, upload a screencast with your steps.  I am not able to replicate your behavior.

That is the PICKFIRST variable, which has already been verified.
