Looking for input from the community on a laptop that can handle 2016 Civil 3d. Something I can get stock that I dont need to upgrade the ram or graphics card or processor etc. Are there any out there that anyone knows of?

Thanks

No such thing unless you want to buy one of these http://www.boxxtech.com/products/mobile-workstations

http://hardware.autodesk.com is a good place to start with 'stock' specs that you can build on from there. Your peers in the C3D forum may have more opinions too http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-civil-3d-general/bd-p/66

Pendean,

When purchasing my new laptop, the model I want doesn't have a roll back option (I tried) to Windows 7 Pro. So it seems I'll be stuck with Windows 10. How big of a problem is this going to be with running Design Suite 2016? (mostly Civil 3d & Map 3d)?

And by the way, I'm looking at the ASUS ZENBOOK Pro UX501VW-DS71T.

It seems to have the config I'm looking for. Thoughts?

since your not doing 3d modeling you dont need a discrete graphics card (dual graphics) dual graphics are a pain and dont work well with autocad 16/win10

Hi,

>> since your not doing 3d modeling

OP stated he'll work with Civil 3D, that is "a lot of 3D"! :cara_guiñando_un_ojo:

Just to make sure, not knowing what you mean by "discrete graphic card", at least avoid shared memory (independent of 2D or 3D work)

There are some threads here which show issues with not beeing able to switch to the better graphic card. But that does not mean it does not work or it is a global problem for all users. I know enough users working well with 2 graphic cards. And I would go a step further to say in >99% of these cases a careful setup of the operating system and drivers would make all working well.

civil 3d is not used for rendering very much

A separate graphics subsystem in a computer. Discrete graphics may refer to a stand-alone display adapter plugged into a motherboard slot or a separate GPU chip on the motherboard. Contrast with integratedgraphics. See GPU and display adapter.

Just my personal experience

Hi,

>> civil 3d is not used for rendering very much

It does not depend on rendering, it depends on type of geometry used and the visual styles you use.

In Civil 3D except of alignment, profile view and section view the whole geometry is 3D, and using another style than "3D Wireframe" needs the GPU.

>> Just my personal experience

No problem with your opinion!

I just wanted to make sure for future readers that they don't think it does never work. It works generally, just a few of the users have issues.

Thanks for the info. No I don't typically render. And rarely step into visual styles other than 3D wireframe. Sometimes I go realistic to lay an image over my surface but in my line of work though I work with 3D surface models, I deliver 2d civil plans... So with that being said I was wondering if you would check out this machine and give me your thoughts?

ASUS ZENBOOK Pro UX501VW-DS71T.

Hi,

Well, "3D Wireframe" is a style that needs DirectX and GPU :cara_guiñando_un_ojo:

Found >>>that info<<< and don't know if there exist more different configurations with your id, but that looks ok, for minimal to mid range Civil 3D projects.
