Keyboard Alias for snap settings?

Please bear with me - I'm a native Microstation user, trying to get along...

Is there any way I can set up keyboard alias commands to set/choose my snap points? The same way I can type M for Move, I'd like to type I for Intersection (and so on). I know I can get there with Ctrl+RightClick, but those are some shortcuts that I've been using for YEARS, and I'd like to have them available.

I do pity whoever gets my machine after I do. I've personalized my pgp/alias file within an inch of its life. But hey, I'm productive!

Not to confuse this thread more, but another "non-native" question? If I have a dimension that is just the way I want to see it, and I want to create another dimension just like it, what is the command to set that "perfect" dimension settings to be my active dimension settings?

Thank you.

It can be but much easier with F function keys (F2, F3.......)

Autolisp is the way to click on exist. dim and make it current.

Try ADDSELECTED command - temporary setting.

Or HERE are some routines for setting current DIMSTYLE by selection (permanent setting). See @Patchy's link.

But my function keys already have settings that I like - I don't think I want to change them. Besides, what I'm looking for is a way to make AutoCAD more closely emulate the software I'm accustomed to. If I wanted to learn another set of keys for things, I would just commit to learning the AutoCAD stuff. Since it's so customizable with aliases, I thought there would just be some snap setting commands I could work in there.

What is Autolisp? Is that some programming thing? Is it like VBA? Does VBA work with AutoCAD?

How can I find commands and settings if I don't know what they are called? Help is great if I want to know what a command does, but if I don't know what I'm looking for, it's not very helpful at all. took me forever to find LAYMCUR...

How would I run an Autolisp from a keyin alias? They look like they just take single commands. Or is there a way to get an alias to read a string of commands?

Do you want to set the Osnap and then start a command?  Or while the command is active you want to set an Osnap?

If you require your customization to match MS then you need to give us examples of exactly what you expect as many of us have not used that program.

How about trying this:

Download this m2.txt and then rename it to m2.lsp and store it on your desktop.

Drag and drop into your drawing area, then start command LINE, click 1st point

then type in:

'm2

That will set snap to midpoint.

It works that way as autolisp.

Good point...

I can start any command, and then, while I'm in the middle of it, I can type in the shortcut which sets my osnap mode temporarily for that one click:

Place line -> select endpoint #1, type "I", osnap mode changes to Intersection, select endpoint #2.

And in AutoCAD (at my level of ignorance) right now it goes like:

Place line -> select endpoint #1, CTRL+RtClick, scan the list for Intersection, osnap mode changes to Intersection, select endpoint #2

It's not THAT different. Just a process that I'm slow, unsteady and unfamiliar with. I'm sure you guys can all change modes without even thinking about it!

Kind funny...I've worked with so many AutoCAD people learning Microstation, and their biggest complaint is "why can't I just type stuff in?". Now here I am on an AutoCAD board trying to learn, and my complaint is "Why can't I just type stuff in?"

Karma...

You may want to try this setting to bring up your snap options in the command line type:   mbuttonpan    Set it 0 (Zero)

Now when you want to select an OSNAP that's not already set you can simply press the middle mouse button.

You will loose some other functions that you may prefer to keep, but worth a try. I've used this for many years !

Another way that makes its characteristics the active settings is MakeMore.lsp with its MM command, available here.  It has some other advantages of ADDSELECTED, too [see the commentary on that page and in the file].

[In that particular case, and given their first description in Post 7 about just that next point [rather than permanently changing the Osnap mode(s) setting], there doesn't seem to be any advantage over just typing MID instead -- same number of keystrokes, and no code required.]

You don't need to "scan the list" -- just type "I" right after Ctrl+RtClick (or Shift+RtClick)...

Or "E" for End point... "M" for Midpoint...

Or another way is holding Shift+E for end point, Shift+M for MidPoint

I don't think you can do that with just a letter [do you mean type "I" and Enter/space?].  But you could probably use a Shortcut Key.  That adds the need for the Ctrl or Alt or Shift or combination along with the other key, but the result is immediate with just one actual keystroke [without Enter/space after it].

Keep in mind that what you are asking for is called
a "Transparent Command". Meaning invoking a snap setting
while in the middle of a command. This is usually accomplished
by typing the first three characters of the desired snap, then [Enter].

As others have suggested, program the [F#] keys. It's much faster.

Dear Mr. MbMinx

Whenever you are in the middle of some commands and you just wanna access your osnap options depending upon the criterion of usage you can just hold your "shift" key down and right click on to the mouse to perform your operation....

Hope this could help you out...
