Unzip the file, in Autocad use command APPLOAD and load the DETER.VLX ; type in DETER and select a part of the drawing or type in ALL.

or DRAG and DROP the DETER.VLX into the Autocad drawing area, acts same as APPLOAD.

Do this only on a copy of a drawing or you have to use UNDETER (go to CADTUTOR.NET and get it) to put your drawing back to normal.

I haven't been able to get on cadtutor.net for a very long time. Is there something I don't know?

It's still there,  maybe your browser is acting up.

i wouldn't recommend DETER for anything other than very casual protection. like i said, i just opened it in Illustrator and that pretty much unlocked it (after an export to DXF).

it's not a great solution, and i think Dean summed up what most of us realize that locking your CAD files is pretty much impossible - send PDFs or DWFs to people for viewing, but other than that, it's pretty hard to lock a DWG down.

I know this is an old thread, but see comments such as this quite often.

"as a consultant you are paid to provide them editable drawings?  and get paid for it?

What is wrong with providing the client with what they request ?

Dave"

You may wish to check where you stand with your insurance in this regard.

As I understand it, yes, you are paid to provide drawings by the client, but the copyright remains with yourself and the right of use for the client only extends to the particular project for which the drawings were prepared. Whether there is any obligation to provide the files in CAD format would I assume depend on the wording of the contract. We do it generally for ease of work for other people within the design team.

The grey area is where somebody takes your drawing file, edits it and re-issues, perhaps still with your details on the drawing but not necessarily. I was recently informed, that regardless of whether or not this is done with your permission, you can still be held accountable should there be an insurance claim.

You just have to trust the people you are working with.

Doubt it. The project contract and/or CAD release form covers any liability for edits done and presented.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

No.  If you figured out a way to lock the CAD file from being edited, I could simply xref it into an empty drawing and bind/insert its contents.  If someone really wants to steal or mess with your content, they will find a way.

Unzip first.  In your AutoCAD drawing, type command "appload"  then navigate to the deter.vlx and select it, choose whether it will always load or load once.  After that, type command "deter" followed by return or space bar.  Then you will need to select objects, followed by a return.  Now you're locked and good to go.

Hello All,

I simply wanted to add some color to this ongoing conversation because it seems to be important to the community.

Apart from company business practices & contract agreements, the Commands for Protecting and Signing Drawings could be useful in this case. These features can be used in conjunction with other file management tools or drives to protect files.

Please "Accept Solution" if a reply or replies have helped resolve the issue or answered your question, to help others in the community.

Didn't know there was a challenge.  I unlocked it, modified the content, and locked it again, all in 30 seconds, and I am quite rusty with AutoCAD.
