Hi!

I currently have an i5-2400, 16GB RAM and an FX 3800 Quadro at work and I need another "workstation" for home. At home, I have an i3-3220 which will be replaced with an i5-3470 and I also have a spare Radeon HD 7770 GHz edition 1GB card.

My question is: Is this Radeon enough for max 3-5MB big CAD files or should I look for older Quadro/FirePro cards?

My budget is about 100-130 dollars.

I work on water connections in towns/smaller cities, so nothing very intensive. No 3D or anything like that.

At work, that FX 3800 is lagging heavily in specific viewing distances.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

What is your work computer’s operating sysytem? Windows 7, 8 or 10?

If it’s Windows 7 or 8, then is it 32 or 64 bit?

What’s the operating system of your home computer? Windows 7, 8 or 10? Is it 32 or 64 bit?

You are giving a lot of consideration to your processor and graphics card and whether they are adequate for professional-type drawings in today’s work environment. Your operating system plays a significant role in your productivity and not considering it may negate any improvements you make to hardware.

Both of them is running Windows 10, 64 bit. I could get an i7-3770 (that is the max what the motherboard supports) for 3x the price of the i5 but it doesn't seem to be that faster.

(Replacing the motherboard and upgrading to a newer architecture is a future plan. For now,  it's not really an option.)

Only way to know for sure is to try it. Install it and give it a spin for a while.

Looking around these forums it appears the FX3800 Quadro is an unfortunate choice, users report the same issues you do.

I'd be surprised if an equally lower-end video 1GB card is going to do much better. But as others noted, only way to tell for sure is to try it.
