I am getting an Internal Error message when I try to import a DGN file.

Any ideas on how to fix this??

HI @Anonymous,

Is it likely that the error is in the DGN file?  Do you have a viewer that can look at the contents such as A360?

Can you attach the DGN file so I can see if I can duplicate the problem?

HI @Anonymous,

Can you attach your DGN file so I can see what kind of issues you are facing?

Often times the problem resides in the DGN file itself. I have Microstation v8 installed so I can test the file this morning for you.

Hi John,

Offending file attached. I can open this in the microstation viewer so I suspect the file is OK and it is an autocad problem.

My workaround for this is to print to pdf from the viewer and then convert the .pdf to .dwg with 3rd party software.

This is the first and probably last time that I will need to do this so please don't expend too much time on the problem.

Just discovered I can't upload a .dgn so changed extension to .doc

Hi @Anonymous,

I was able to duplicate the "Internal Error" message on my side too. I found that when the Microstation is saved in a v7 version then it did import properly. I will attach that file here for you.

I found that exporting from Microstation to DWG worked quite well. I have imported DGN files numerous times before without error so I suspect that there is some entity in this file that AutoCAD doesn't understand in the import process.

Hi John,

Well I imported the v7 file you sent and got a very strange result, as in the attached v7pdf. What I was expecting to see is in the other pdf.

Hi @Anonymous,

I apologize that I attached the wrong file. When I did the saveas it saved both the Design Model as well as the Option1 model.

I still researching the v8 issue. I am told that the import actually uses the Bentley Toolkit so I am not sure why it is failing.

I have been trying to import some dgn files.  Not sure which version of Microstation saved them but they are quite old (10+ years).

Anyway, 2017 has all sorts of problems, fatal bastids but mainly internal errors resulting in either no content or what looks like the current title frame + live content within the model space (no x-ref content).

Reading this thread (particularly the post above from @john.vellek about the versioning) made me wonder if 2015 might work better.

Hey presto, it did.  Every time.  So it looks to be a 2017 issue.

The fatal bastids generated automatic reports, which I did complete so maybe something will come of it.

Hi John,

I saw your post regarding the DGN import command in civil 3D. I have a similar problem. The two DGN files I'm having issues with are suppose to be the cross-section sheets for a project but I can't seem to get it to open in either civil 3D or Trimble Business Center. Do you think its how the DOT exported the DGN or is it on my end? Let me know what you think.

Thanks

HI @Anonymous,

Can you send me one of their files? I can try to open in AutoCAD and Microstation too to see if there is anything obvious going on. It might just be a bad file but I am happy to investigate.

The files should be in the zip folder. Thanks for taking a look.

Hi @Anonymous,

It appears that you are missing some of their files that are linked into their model.  Can you contact them to see if you can obtain the files?

R:\project\10200213.074\design\DS_Align.dgn is missing.
R:\project\10200213.074\design\RDM.dgn is missing.
R:\project\10200213.074\design\RDPG_Features.dgn is missing.
R:\project\10200213.074\design\Terrain_Existing.dgn is missing.
R:\project\10200213.074\design\DS_Util.dgn is missing.
R:\project\10200213.074\design\Shape.dgn is missing.

I have access to a few of those files already (alignment and existing ground). I can see about getting the rest. What does having the full set let you do?  How should I suggest the files be saved so that the information for the cross-sections sheets is importable into civil 3d and other software in the future?

Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous,

Without all of the files my AutoCAD cancels the import.  I will install Microstation later today to see if I can address some of your other questions.

Hi @Anonymous,

Take a look at this file that I have attached.  I simply ran export from Microstation.  It still shows a missing reference file but at least I can see some data on my side.  Perhaps all the DOT needs to do for you is save in DWG format.
