INSERT Command does nothing

AutoCAD stays stuck when typing or choosing INSERT from ribbon. It happens with small or large files.  It does not lock up completely because I can quickly cancel out of the frozen state by hitting Esc key.  I have purged drawing. Using AutoCAD 2017 recently installed on Windows 10.  I have several computers including one MAC running windows 10 using bootcamp but the problem is only on a brand new Dell XPS 8900 Specail Edition. I have also tried doing an AutoCAD repair but still have the same problem.  I don't want to do a complete reinstall, but I guess I might have to try that.

Can Anyone HELP PLEASE?

Thanks

If you let it sit for a few minutes, does it eventually recover?
Kind of sounds like AutoCAD is looking for something it can't find. It's notorious for "freezing up" when it's actually waiting on the O/S for something.

Hi,

>> I can quickly cancel out of the frozen state by hitting Esc key.

Sounds like it's just the dialog which is sitting outside of your screen area, pressing <ESC> ends the dialog and brings you back to AutoCAD command line.

Try these steps:

  • Start command _INSERT
  • press <ALT><SPACE> ... now a context menu should pop up
  • use cursor key <DOWN> to move the cursor to "Move" then press <ENTER>
  • use cursor keys <LEFT > or <RIGHT> to move the dialog inside the visible area of your display
  • when you see the dialog you can continue with your mouse to move the dialog and to left-click to set the new position for the dialog.

Thank You So Much!I forgot to mention that I have an extra monitor attached to the PC.Trying what you suggested using ALT+Space wasn't quite working but it did let me see the insert dialogue box briefly then it would disappear. So I knew the problem was what you said it was.  I also remembered changing the resolution to lower than the recommended because I am using a 4K monitor so the Ribbon and Dialogue Boxes look tiny. When I changed to the highest resolution, there it was, the missing Box, to the side of the other monitor. Thanks Again! Great Suggestion!
