Hi all,

Does anybody know the mechanism by which AutoCAD smooths meshes? Is the algorithm executed dependent on the type of mesh?

Thanks,

Abi

Hi @Anonymous,

Quite frankly I don't have a ready answer for you. Is there a specific problem you are facing? I can try to find some resources on this issue if you can give me a bit more detail.

Are you asking for the default NURBS parameters that are used when doing an operation like lofting?  There are different options for the NURBS knots.  You can see some of them if you create a spline and then look at its Knot parameters (e.g., UNiform, Chord, SqrtChord, etc.).  It would take some digging to find out what the Autodesk developers used for defaults.  Spline and surfaces start with a 3rd order NURBS blending of adjacent segments.

Hi @Anonymous,

Did @leeminardi's post help? If not, please give me more detail so I can research this for you.

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! I've included this link which might help better explain what I mean. I know on Meshlab you can choose what kind of smoothing you want (laplacian, butterfly subdivision etc) and was wondering how AutoCAD smooths meshes when these options aren't available (or maybe they are and I can't find them). Thanks very much.

Hi @Anonymous,

There are quite a few methods for smoothing meshes.

Here is an article that describes an overview of the feature.  You can also perform Nurbs editing  using control vertices if that is what you are seeking.
