Ok Recently changed roles within my Organisation, I'm now in charge of the assets I used to replace -Waste Water Pipes (sewer) and Stormwater infrastructure.
Part of my new role, apart form developing the renewals programmes ($35-40M pa) is to look at efficiencies, particularly in terms of asset renewals, long term management and organisational resilience so I've become very interested how data 'flows' through orgnaisations such as ours.
We are currently migrating all our GIS asset data from Hexagon (Geomedia) into ESRI and traditionally we have used a multi step sequence to extract asset data via FME then into Autocad or Microstation as a base for ongoing renewals and upgrade programmes. The Organisation has numerous AEC licensees, but in my former role I was only allowed to have Autocad on my work machine, nothing else, 3D designs are traditionally done in a product called 12D.
I still have access to my old AEC licenese so on my home machine I have been exploring better ways of doing things and that's where this journey has taken me.
Data aggregators like Infraworks, the ESRI plug in has started this exploration and general desire to do things better.
Two issues I now have, our data standards are not perfect, naming conventions, missing data, differing units all contribute to poor data sharing and all require a great deal of manual (therefore expensive/inefficient) manipulation.
Secondly willingness to change- because this is the way its always been done!!!!
So as previously mentioned I need to understand how we cam better aggregate these data sets as well as work to improve data quality from gathering data from the field through design to operation and maintenance going forward.
Thus looking for the best way to do this and since its not longer my primary primary role within my organisation I do this in my own time after work.
Re what I'm using I've started to learn Civil3d and do have Map3d in addition Infraworks and Plant3d ( again this is part of my role looking into BIM and data standards for all out Pump Stations/ Well heads etc.
I also now have access to ArcGIS Pro to review out corporate data sets.
