roman numerals are just letters... or am i missing something?

Maybe he wants to have the top and bottom horizontal lines be one line like you sometimes see with roman numerals. If not then yes they are just letters. You could probably shorten the space between the letters to get this effect by pushing letters closer together. In the text editor it's in the formatting pull down.

Your best opt is using a diff font, ie Times New Roman. This font will give you the tix marks, Simplex doesn't have it. Most computers will have this font, don't have to d/l it.

If you want serifs and a .shx font [neither a part of your request], try ROMANT:

That's Mtext with the character spacing reduced as suggested by @gotphish001 .

If those are not the issue, illustrate what you want.
