How to Slice a Solid with a closed 3D Polyline?

Hi all!

I'm trying to slice the selected solid with a 3D polyline (pink) as shown below:

How do I do this? I've tried everything I can think of and find on the internets. It should be bloody easy. It's just a simple planar slice.

Haaalp! 🙂

Hi,

since we don't have the dwg file itself for testing ... make sure that you don't have any Mesh elements because meshes cannot directly be sliced or used as slicing surfaces . please read this AKN article that gives you so many tips that can help . >> Click <<

Hi,

as long as your 3D-Poly really intersects the complete 3D-Solid you can:

run command _SURFPATCH option _CURVES to create a surface from your closed 3D-Poly

run command _SLICE option _SURFACE to slice your 3D-Solid.

Are you talking about a plan ?

So, why didn't you use the 3 points option ? If not, or another option, it is a 2 points command.

@Alfred.NESWADBA:

I tried converting to a surface and then slicing, but when I went to slice and told it to use a surface, when I chose my newly created surface, it wouldn't select. It seems like it does intersect, though. So i'm not sure what the issue is. I've attached the file.

@imadHabash file is attached.

@tramber i have no idea what you're saying.

Hi,

>> when I chose my newly created surface, it wouldn't select

Switch to visual style "2D Wireframe" or turn on SELECTIONCYCLING, can you then select the surface?

BTW: there is no surface in your dwg-file

I tried one of the 3D-Polylines, worked well ...

PS: you should better freeze layers than turning them off, makes the performance on the display better and you are more safe when selecting objects to modify or delete them (as objects on layers turned OFF are selectable).

as an alternative

turn of layer Enclosure Bottom

select the pink polyline & eXplode it into four lines and loft the two short ends to make a surface between cross sections

turn on layer Enclosure Bottom and slice

the short lines are all you needed to do that in reality

Sorry, I should have been more precise; I was able to select click on it during the operation, but it just ignored the selection, autocad wouldn't accept it as a valid surface in which to slice.

There was no surface in that file because I had undone it to go back to start in case I messed something up.

I'm not sure why it worked for you and not for me. 😐 I was using AutoDesk 2016 Mac, maybe its' a bug in that version. 😞

Got it to work! I wasn't selecting the surface, i was selecting the edge, for some reason.

thanks for your help.

Hi,

>> I'm not sure why it worked for you and not for me

Follow my video and try the same steps in a new drawing with a simple box and a 3D-Poly like I did with object snap _NEAREST at every vertical edge.

Does not fail too?
