When I receive a cad-file from the civil engineers I have a bunch of squares where there should be storm boxes for example. As far as I know it's because they are using 3D and I'm using 2D 2018. I have attached a photo of the boxes, every time this happens I have to contact the engineer for a new file, getting a little old, any help would be great.

They are using "Autodesk Civil 3D", and you might be using "AutoCAD LT 2018" or "AutoCAD 2018", but there does not exist a product named "2D AutoCAD". To know what you have you can start command _ABOUT.
What you can do to see the complete content is to install the Civil 3D object enabler ... from >>>here<<<. I hope you have a 64bit operating system, because that is needed for the object enabler.
If that does not work for you you can ask the creator of that file to use command -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD and so create a new dwg-file that's content is exploded to AutoCAD compatible objects without the need of Civil 3D or an object enabler.
