How to measure and place a 3d object relative to another 3d object?

I have a 2000x1000x5 mm 3d object and I would like to place a 900 mm Length bar of 50x30x2 mm on it at a distance of 50 mm from each side as shown in the picture below. What's the best approach in accomplishing this?

Why not move it to the corner using snap for accuracy, then move x,y = 50,50

or move midpoint to midpoint then move away 50mm

draw 50 mm radius at  big plate corner , then 2 50 mm  at its quadrant , move the bar to  the 2 last circle intersection , the same as it was drawing in the old days, before CAD

If the both parts are parallel, you can do it >>this way<<. 

If the beam is placed anywhere in the space, >>this way<< is possible.
