How to make Xref all one colour? (all layers are set to ByLayer already)

As stated, all layers in the XREF are set to ByLayer, and VISRETAIN is set to 0.

I brought the XREF in on a layer where the layer's colour is YELLOW, yet the XREF is still just multicoloured like it usually is. How do I make it all one colour, if not by importing it on one layer? Changing VISRETAIN to 1 makes no visible difference.

There must be a setting for this somewhere, do i really have to create copies of each XREF files each time I want the colour to change?

Sussed it.

You need to open the layer properties manager in the drawing that the XREF is in, and look for all the layers with the prefix [XREF dwg name] e.,g. if the XREF is called "survey plan", then look for all layers that say "survey plan" as a prefix.

Highlight ALL of those layers (shift and arrow keys once one is highlighted), then change the colour of one and all the highlighted layers change colour.

Personally I'd like a big button that says "XREF colour override in the XREF manager that does this but oh well.

Changing the layers like this does NOT change them on the source XREF either i.e. if you open the XREF, the colours will be right, not all one colour like they are in the main drawing.

I just called in an xref for a quick test

In the Layers properties manager an xref filter should appear. Click on that and then change the xref layer colours there.
