How to create Block attributes that place Bylayer?

To all,

I have several blocks that I've created that are being placed on a PDF underlay. The PDF underlay is on Layer 0 which is locked to prevent inadvertent selection. The block entities and attributes were also created on Layer 0 so that when the blocks are inserted they will display Bylayer and can be turned on-off by the layer properties. The block entities and attributes turn on and off along with the associated layer they were placed on just fine but if I double-click a block to enter or change the attribute values all I get is a message stating to "Select a Block". I have to unlock Layer 0 to be able to change the attribute values.

Is there a way to create block attributes that are associated with the layer they are placed on instead of the layer they were created on and allow the attribute values to be changed? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this issue!

HI,

>> The PDF underlay is on Layer 0 which is locked

I would never lock (or turn off or freeze) layer 0.
Put your PDF to a "reference" layer or any other layer you can lock ... that solves all your other issues.

Hi Alfred,

Thanks so much for your reply and advice. I tried your advice and you are spot on! I don't know why I didn't think of that myself. Somewhere back in time I remembered a suggestion that creating block entities and their attributes on layer zero would allow the same block to placed on multiple layers when placed Bylayer. For some reason I got it in my head that the layer had to be locked for this to work. Anyway, thanks again for your help with this and have a nice day!
