How do I make the my user profile the default profile?

We just upgraded from AutoCAD 2016 to AutoCAD Electrical 2017 and I have imported my user profile from 16 to 17 and set it as current. After I close AutoCAD down and open it back up the current profile is ACADE. How do I make my profile the default profile when I open AutoCAD so I don't have to change it everytime I open AutoCAD?

Hi @Anonymous,

You can look to this article for more detailed information but I have provided the steps below. Let me know if you have other questions.

You can set up one or more shortcut icons on the Windows desktop that will start AutoCAD and begin the drawing process using a specified profile (ARG) file. To start AutoCAD with the profile you want:

  1. On the Windows desktop, right-click the AutoCAD icon, and click Properties.

  2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Shortcut tab and in the Target text box, at the end, enter /p followed by the name and path of the profile (filename.arg) that you want AutoCAD to use when it starts.

    Example:

    "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2000\acad.exe" /p "C:\Program Files\ AutoCAD 2000\FILENAME.arg"

Note: You must use quotation marks (" ") when the directory path names contain spaces.
  3. Click OK to accept the changes and exit to the Windows desktop.

AutoCAD will use the profile that you set in the shortcut icon each time the program is started. If the shortcut icon specifies the same profile as one that is already defined in AutoCAD, the settings in the ARG file will not be imported.

Hello,

is there an other way, too?

The solution doesn't work with Vault. If i open a *dwg from Vault, AutoCAD start with the default-Profile.

What's the solution for this?

Best regards

Michael

Just rename your user profile to the default name.

I tried the first method mentioned and ran into the "Need Administrative Permission" box because I am working on a company computer. Under Profiles in the Options command, I renamed the startup profile <<ACADMPP>> to <<ORIGINAL>> and renamed my profile to <<ACADMPP>>. Worked like a charm and is less confusing to do.

If you can't change the target for the shortcut you probably don't have permissions.

Just go to your options and change the default profile to something else and rename your profile to the default.

Just type op <enter> it will take you to options, go to the profile tab and make your changes there.

In the screen shot below the default is <<C3D_imperial>>

Don't know if you have already solved your problem.

Apart from @jcushing suggestion, here just another workaround if you haven't exported your profile.

Supposed you have your own profile YourProfle (note: no space in the name) in "Options" => "Profile" tab.

You can create a shortcut on desktop then click "properties".

In the target box you replace the existing one with this (my version is 2019 Mechanical as an example)

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2019\acad.exe" /p YourProfile /product ACADM /language "en-US"

HTAH (Hope That Also Helps) 😀
