'Fit To Paper' unselectable when choosing 'Layout' from Plot dialog box

Hi All:  This has bugged me for some time and I'm sure someone has an answer.

When plotting, why can't I select the 'Fit To Paper' option when I choose 'Layout' from the Plot Area portion of the Plot dialog box?  I would like to Batch Plot sets to 11x17 using a saved page setup.  I create the setup but it only allows me to fit to paper when I have Extents selected.  It is grayed out when I choose Layout.

In each individual layout I am able to save a page setup and use 'Window' and then fit to paper.  But I can't select the window option from Page Setup Mgr or Manage Page Setups in SSM.  And if I choose Extents it will print everything beyond the window/tb border if I have stuff out there.

WHY????Smiley Frustrated

I have one page set up for the full size plotter 24 x 36 and set to layout.

A seond page set up is for 11x17 to a laser printer.

This one is set to "window"  (use a window to select the 24x36 sheet) and option set to "fit to paper"

Paper size is of course 11x17 for this setup.

You can't have "layout" and fit to window.

LAYOUT is a 'what to plot' choice that means you want that paper size to be the output result.

FIT TO PAPER is the plot scale choice that changes the paper size: counter to the choice above. Since the two conflict and contradict each other you will need to select another "what to plot' choice like EXTENTS or WINDOW (or DISPLAY).

Your other option is to set up views. It involves more upfront work but if you need  to use publish regularly, it might be worth the time.
