First click doesn't work for line, copy, move, text commands

Autocad 2014: Clicking problem for many commands:

Line command: I have to click twice to specify the FIRST point

Copy & move commands: I have to click twice, or even three times, to select the object to be copied/moved, especially if I am using window selection, not direct selection

Text command: I have to click four times to get out of my text command and edit another text, and have to click twice to specify the start point of the text.

This problem is inconsistent. It appears sometimes, disappears other times. It is driving me completely drazy and slowing down my workflow as I'm generally doing a lot more clicking than I should be.

I have tried the following to no avail:

edgemode: both 0 and 1 don't help

Pickfirst: set to 1

Qaflags

Resetting autocad settings helps for a bit, then I'm back to the same problem

My file is only 830KB. This happens with all autocad files, not just one. Please help!

Have you loaded an old profile or "reset" your AutoCAD? I'd suggest starting from default if this is the case.

You must have an autolisp or an add-on that changed your QAFLAGS, check this variable when it acting up.

It should be set on 0

Have you tried another mouse?  That sounds as though it could be nothing more than a faulty or dirty mouse pick button.

...in addition to the other replies, also be aware that the mouse actually "picks" on mouse up, not mouse down.

I have seen a lot of beginners start to pick up speed and suddenly nothing works right.  Especially when the problem appears to be intermittent.  They are moving the mouse before letting up on the pick and have to go back and try again.  Release button, then move.

Hmmm, well at least that used to be the case when I taught AutoCAD.  Haven't really used AutoCAD for years.  I just tried - and couldn't reproduce the mouse down/mouse up button behavior I just described.

Edit 2: I can now reproduce the behavior on ribbon icons, but not on drawing entities.

I feel like I have had similar issues that randomly popped up after an update of the Program. It is extremely frustrating to require additional clicks for no reason at all once you have selected the items you want.

Try the PICKADD command, and change the variable to 1.

PICKADD Variable '0' = using SHIFT to add objects to a selection

PICKADD Variable '1' = click to add objects to a selection

PICKADD Variable '2' = click to add objects to a selection , HOWEVER you must click on a blank area to finalize your selection, and possibly another click to move on to the next step in a command that requires selections.

Hope this helps

The worst part of this problem is that it's intermittent.
It's been driving me crazy for the last couple of months.
Check 'Drafting Settings' (type "DS")
Go to tab 'SelectionCycling' (you may need to scroll).
UNtick "Allow selection cycling".
If it is already unticked then you still have problems.
Seemingly when you are selecting overlapping or crossing objects
it's wanting to know if you have chosen the right one,
same applies to dimensioning from a corner where two lines meet.

I was struggling with this too, i followed all the instructions from other posters, but the only thing that worked for me was making sure my Selection mode was properly turned on, specifically the Noun/Verb selection button in the options menu.
