Fill a block attribute with a field?

I have a block for my sheet border.

Originally I thought that I could include the filed for "CurrentSheetNumber" in my block and it would update for whatever sheet I placed it in. That didn't work - it stayed as ####.

Then I read that I could use an attribute in my block, and insert a field for that value. I created the attribute in my block file, opened my sheet file and inserted the block. When the Attributes dialog opened up, I was able to use ctrl+F to add my field, which did indeed show the sheet number as intended. But when I clicked OK, that attribute/field is not visible.

I went back to my block drawing to check the attribute, and "Invisible" is set to No. If I insert the block and just type in random numbers for the attribute, it doesn't show, either. This may not be an issue with the field, it could be a problem with the attribute, but I don't know how to troubleshoot either one.

I've attached the file. The attribute in question is "Sheet Number" shown as "SN". Everything else is fine. I am working in Civil 3D 2018 (client preference). Can anybody explain what might be going on?

Well, I restarted AutoCAD, and the block works now. If anyone has any suggestion what the issue might have been, I'd appreciate the insight. But I can get my work done now.

Gremlins! you should always do what you did as part of your self-diagnosing processes, namely
