File Explorer crashes in Windows 10 when AutoCad is installed

File Explorer crashes in Windows 10 when AutoCad is installed

Anonymous

Having an annoying issue with some engineering systems randomly closing File Explorer windows that are viewing a certain network drive in Windows 10. A user doesn't even have to have AutoCAD open, and this behavior still happens. I've tried reinstalling a system fresh with Windows 10 and updated it to 1709 and then did a new install of AutoCAD 2018 hoping to fix this issue, but it returned after the user started using the system again. I know it has something to do with AutoCAD because none of our other systems without AutoCAD installed have this issue. Anyone else had this happen or more importantly know a solution to fix it?

Hi @Anonymous,

I have never seen this issue before.  Which version of Windows 10 Version of 1709 are you running on the workstation (type WINVER)? When working on this computer if you keep an eye on Task Manager is there anything running that shouldn't be?  What type of drive mapping do you use (local or group policy or login script)?

What Security software is running on this workstation and if you disable it temporarily does the problem still exist?

What happens if you log on as a different user on this workstation?

Do you see any errors in the Windows Event log?

I know, a lot of questions here but I hope that I can isolate this quickly for you.

Hi John,

Thanks for the response.

Nothing running that shouldn't be in task manager. Like I said previously it's a brand new reload of Windows 1709 (16299.309) with AutoCAD 2018 (O.49.0.0)installed. Drives are mapped with GP. All the other software running on the system is the same that runs on all our non engineering systems and they haven't experienced this particular problem with File Explorer randomly closing/crashing out.

I have multiple users having the same problem so I know it can't be related to one particular user. It happens on all our systems we currently have AutoCAD loaded on whether or not it is in use or not.

No errors are logged for it in Event Viewer when it happens. I've had users notify me the instant they had it happened so I could check the logs to see, but found no logged errors or problems.

Been trying to isolate it for a couple weeks now without much luck. I've uninstalled all versions and instances I found of AutoCAD on the PC. Then completely reinstalled AutoCAD 2018. Still had same issue happen afterwards. Then recently did the nuclear option of a total clean install of Windows 10 and AutoCAD 2018. But it keeps rearing it's ugly head each time.

Hi @Anonymous,

Please update the AutoCAD 2018 with all the updates. My version is O.161.0.0 AutoCAD 2018.1.2 Update.

Please also run Windows updates. My current version is OS build 16299.334.

The reason I asked about a new user logon is that I want to see if an "out-of-the-box" (no customization) condition still displays this behavior.

I see also that you are working with another specialist directly on this issue. I believe she suggested checking to verify that the application is registered properly in the Windows registry. Have you checked this yet?

I will go ahead and run the updates for both Windows and AutoCAD.

As far as the user logon, I basically built a PC from scratch and had one of the users logon to it with a new profile. They still experience the same problem.

As far as the second step, I'm not sure I've did that. Is there a tutorial on how I can verify that?

Try Nirsoft's ShellExView and disable extensions related to DWG or Autodesk and then restart Windows. After that if it works fine you can enable them one by one and see when the problem happens again. https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
If you have any of our apps like DWG Columns or DwgInfoTip causing problems let me know.

Hi @Anonymous,

I understand that you have a case open with another specialist so I don't want to confuse things by offering different options but here is my suggestion:

First, get account access for your Autodesk account so that you can properly obtain downloads and updates. I understand that the other specialist is putting you in contact with the proper group to see if they can help you directly but you will likely have to talk to your account administrator.

This issue does seem unique to your environment as I have found no other ones that seem even similar. This indicates to me that there is something different in your environment.

Once you have account access, please work through the following steps:

  • Clean install of Windows (not an image) and then run all Windows updates. This should result in a WINVER of Version 1709, OS Build 16299.334 or higher.
  • Then install AutoCAD 2018 with All updates applied resulting in a Product version of O.161.0.0 AutoCAD 2018.1.2 Update
  • Do not install Any other applications.
  • Check the Windows Event logs to verify that no errors are present.
  • Create a local administrator account and then disconnect the network.
  • Logon using the local account.
  • Start AutoCAD once and then close it. Now, check Windows Explorer to see if it fails.
  • If that works, reconnect the network and logon using a Domain Admin account.
  • Start AutoCAD once and then close it. Now, check Windows Explorer to see if it fails.
  • If that works, reconnect the network and again logon as the Domain Admin to test

Please let me know the results of these steps.

Thank you. this worked for me. Explorer crashed after intalling autocad 2010 on win 10 buid 1803, rendering my pc useless.

My pc config is an old one, amd athlon 64 x2 5600+ 2.9 ghz, 4 gb ram ddr2, radeon hd 5450, 60 gb ssd corsair force ls.

I installed autocad 2010 x64 and it worked fine until I restarted the pc. After restart taskbar icons did not load, except cortana icon. I could not click any desktop icon. nothing happened when i clicked right mouse button. More than that, when hovering mouse cursor over start icon, that waiting circle appeared instead of cursor arrow and each time i clicked start button windows explorer would restart but in the same state (like not properly loaded). Before reading this post I installed windows and autocad 4 times in a row in the same day, each time with different settings but with the same results. I managed to start chrome with the help of task manager and downloaded shexviw.exe.

After disabling everything related to auodesk I clicked one more time on start icon and voila. explorer restarts and fully loads. Everything is back to normal even after a reboot. Thank you again and please forgive my writing errors, english is not my native language.

Hi John,

My apologies. I know it has been awhile since this issue. I finally did get it resolved. It ended up having to do with a drive map group policy that was set to replace. We changed the group policy to update instead of replace for the drives our engineers had mapped and it fixed this issue.

Thanks again though for the help.

I have the same issue.  My company IT team says they can't change the group policy.  They have not provided another solution. My explorer closes numerous times a day on its own since Win 10 update (latest version) and my Civil 3D 2018, 2017 and 2014 all close frequently by themselves throughout the day.  Does anyone have a solution other than changing the group policy?  Thank you.

Worked.

Just download ShellExView.

Extract
Run as Administrator

then I sort the "type", so all Autudesk and AutoCAD shell extension "grouped".

select all Autodesk/AutoCAD shell extension, then right click, choose disable (or you can just press F7).

The windows 10 tasbar works fine now.

thankyou very much!!!!
