field is converted into text

Hi,

Why all my fields are suddenly converted into text ? For instance, the mesure of an area linked to a polyline isn't linked to it anymore, and when I change the shape of the polyline the value doesn't update anymore. One of my co-workers noticed il is due to editing an xref within the host file. But when I test that, it doesn't happen.

Thank for your help.

Hi,

>> Why all my fields are suddenly converted into text

Whenever you start command _FIELD the object is a MTEXT object, so nothing is converted ... in case you see "MText" when you select such an object.

If you see "Text" instead of "MText" then a command like _EXPLODE might have modified this (or a tool which does a similar "destruction").

And to make sure ... to update the field values did you run command _UPDATEFIELD?

Did someone accidentally EXPLODE all of your FIELD objects? That's the only way to "convert them" to text objects. There is no going back after that.

Check your backups and try to recover them if available.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry I didn't explain thoroughly : the Mtext remains and doesn't convert into text. The field do disapear, but the value remains like if you write it down by yourself without linking it to the polyline

OK, thank your for the more detailed description.

If you (or anyone else) have not converted the field-value to a static text content ... have you saved the dwg-file back to a very old version? Or was the dwg-file opened/modified by any other product than AutoCAD?

the files are saved to autocad 2004 version, and we use autocad 2020. It's very annoying because it does the same mess inside all our spreadsheets !

Hi,

>> the files are saved to autocad 2004 version,

Well, why do you do this? A working file should not be saved back to such an old DWG-version as a lot of new objects exist now in AutoCAD which were not invented in AutoCAD 2004 ... this means all the newer objects need to be "downgraded" to be compatible with AutoCAD 2004.

>> it does the same mess inside all our spreadsheets !

Sorry, this is not a mess, this is necessary as AutoCAD 2004 had no idea about fields and also not an idea about tables.

My rule is to never save back my working projects to any older file format. If anyone else wants to have my dwg-file I can export it in an old format, but this is a copy then and does not convert my active project.

This looks like a solution. Thanks. I'll set up the computers to save back to 2020 version and keep you informed. But why does this happen in a kind of randomly way ? When the fields are created in a file closed and saved and pc turned off, the next morning everything is fine, they're still there, and some days later, we realize they become static text-content.

Self-inflicted disaster: the features you want to keep were not around back in R2004 era.

Should not happen randomly.

Hello

I have a block with attributes witch is dedicated to area . After inserting the block and writing data, I am using "Insert filed..." for picking polyline and selecting the area. After pressing Ok in the "Field" dialog box , area number has a gray background but after clicking apply & Ok in Attribute editor it turnes to a simple text which is obviously not possible to be updated in case of any changes of polylines area.

Could you help me with this issue? I am using AutoCAD 2022.

Hi,

Should not do it that way, what happens if you again double click the text? Or what happens if you change the polylines size and then run command _UPDATEFIELD ... does the value change then to the new value?

If not please upload a dwg-file with one example, also a screenshot of command/dialog _ABOUT could be helpful.

Download and use my free AOL app to automate the link of pline’s area value to you block attribute and see if that’s successful
