Error using Viewdetail command autocad 2017 mac

Hi

I'm trying to create close up details of components in a 2d drawing, I've never done this before but researching has lead me to the Viewdetail command, however when I try this I get an error Viewdetailcreation = 0 (read only) can anyone help with this as it's very time consuming having to draw each part again in 3:1 scale.
Thanks Ted

Hello,

The ViewDetail command is for 3D work so let's ignore that one for now.

If you already have a 2D drawing finished in Model Space (dark background) then I would suggest that you select a Layout tab ("Layout1 is default) and switch over to Paper Space (white background).  You will find a rectangle shaped object on Layout1 which is called a Viewport.  The Viewport is like a window into Model Space.

Double-click inside of the rectangular Viewport to activate it and perform a Zoom->Extents (double-click the mouse wheel if you like).  You should see your entire 2D set of objects fit to the ViewPort.

Now perform a Zoom->Window around the area of interest in your 2D model objects.  This area will now zoom in the Viewport.

You can then set a scale for the viewport by clicking the scale list at the bottom right of your screen.

Once the scale you desire is set you can double-click outside of the Viewport and AutoCAD will deactivate the viewport.

This is the simplest method for a detail view but you will need to learn more about Viewports to add them and place them for working drawings.

Hope this helps!

blyoung,

Thank you for coming back with such a detailed response to my post its much appreciated, I yes I understand where you're coming from with your explanation; use different viewports to zoom in on parts of my drawing, would I then be able to dimension them up without putting dimensions on the model though? is there a way to do this in model space? I'll attach an example of one I did the hard way. Basically I didn't want to dimension the connection part of my frame on the main plan view as they would be too zoomed out to define properly, so what I did was copy the plan view then drew a rectangle round the part I wanted to detail, then trimmed everything back to the edges of my box, following that I scaled it up 3:1 and dimensioned up my holes etc., I then had to override the dimension text as it was 3x too big, I cant help thinking I went the hard way doing this, would your suggested method allow me to get a similar outcome?

Thanks again Ted

Hello again,

Please check out the dwg I am attaching.  I used your pdf to import and scale objects, but they are not quite accurate as you will see in the dimensioning.

However I have utilized viewports and dimensioning on the layout to illustrate a great method of keeping only model elements in Model Space and everything else in Paper Space.  While there is a wide range of feelings on this technique (many users still prefer to keep their dimensions in Model Space).  I teach this method due to the "next level".  When you proceed to 3D solid modeling and explore the ViewBase commands for your solids, you will find that viewports are no longer needed and instead, 2D views of the model are generated on the layout with Paper Space dimensions being THE ONLY WAY to annotate.

I encourage you to pick the dwg apart to see my dimension settings, viewport scales, usage of the secondary viewport ( instead of copying elements), and centermark/centerline usages.  You should note that I used the modern Centermark command and settings for it (found here: http://blogs.autodesk.com/autocad/autocad-2017-new-centerlines-center-marks/) and a mixed usage of traditional and modern Centerlines.

Feel free to reach back with any questions.  I hope this adds a bit more illumination on what you are seeking.

Cheers,

Blaine

I am attaching another dwg for your review.

I created an accurate 3D solid model of your Sub Base and generated base views (ViewBase) and a detail view (ViewDetail).  ViewDetail was the command that you initially posted about and I wanted to show you a result with that usage.  I ignbored the pdf extractions that I performed for the 2D sample I sent last time, and I recreated true elements based upon the dimension data on your initial design.

I did not apply dimensions to the "A4 (2)" layout tab.  You can simply look over the views and use this file a reference if you elect to work in 3D at some point.  Remember that these base views are not in viewports and that dimensional data for this process must be on the Paper Space layout.

Cheers,

Blaine

Hi @Anonymous,

@beyoungjr has gone to some effort to make a good solution for you. I am curious however about the Mac component in your subject line.

If I am correct, Viewdetail works on the Inventor engine technology associated with Viewbase which is not included in AutoCAD for Mac.

Can you clarify which version of AutoCAD you are using? (AutoCAD 2017 OR AutoCAD for Mac 2017)

Viewbase is not included in AutoCAD for Mac: nothing you can do about it unless you want to switch to the Windows version of AutoCAD2017.
