Enable ability to choose which application is opened by clicking .dwg file

I am seeing many people have a similar problem. We have many versions of AutoCAD installed on our computer but clicking on a .dwg file will ONLY open a certain AutoCAD program when we ma need a different one open

example:

I have AutoCAD 2015, 2017 and 2018 and when I click on any .dwg file it will open AutoCAD 2017 but I need 2018 open. I know you can right click and open with but the only extension is AutoCAD.exe and not year specific.

Hi,

as long as the DWG-file is connected to "AutoCAD Dwg Launcher" a double click to a DWG-file will start that type and version and profile of AutoCAD you had started the last time.

>> when I click on any .dwg file it will open AutoCAD 2017 but I need 2018 open

AutoCAD does not know what you want in that moment. How should it :cara_guiñando_un_ojo:

My workflow in such cases is to open that type/version/profile of AutoCAD I need and then double-click or drag&drop the DWG-file into AutoCAD.

Really, the ability to right click on the file and select Open With should allow us to choose which version to open the drawing with, but it simply just says AutoCAD for ALL versions, instead, it should say AutoCAD 2017, AutoCAD 2018, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017, etc.

Hi,

In that case you want to have it controlled with every detail you would have to split the starting of ACAD.EXE by all the AutoCAD profiles you have. For me it does not help to start ACAD.EXE from a specific version without specifying the profile I need.

That means for me

  • AutoCAD 2016 profile A
  • AutoCAD 2016 profile B
  • AutoCAD 2016 profile C
  • AutoCAD Map 3D 2016 profile A
  • AutoCAD Map 3D 2016 profile B
  • AutoCAD Map 3D 2016 profile C
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 profile A
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 profile B
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 profile C
  • And then we repeat the same (or even more profiles) for 2017, 2018 and maybe AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electical

...does that make sense? The list would be so long that it is not user friendly at all (at least not for me)

But feel free to ask to add this functionality in the product feedback site >>>click<<<
