Dynamic Input box disappears when working within certain files in AutoCAD

alrighty. I have a student license of autocad 20201. on certain files, whenever I try to draw from any point on a layer that isn't active, dimension input turns itself off. I've done a lot of googling but its worth noting i'm pretty new to autocad.

What does that mean? Is the active layer you are drawing dimensions on turned off?
What did your teacher or peers offer us for a fix?

Are you using AEC Dimensions? This forum is for the program AutoCAD ARCHITECTURE, if you only have plain AutoCAD (regardless of what field of study you are in) the correct forum for that software is over here https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-forum/bd-p/706

oh shoot, you’re right I apologize i think it’s just regular autocad. as for a solution from my teacher, i’m self taught i’m just taking advantage of the fact that it’s free for students.

When I saw dimension input, i’m referring to the small white box that appears whenever you draw a line that actively shows you how long it is and allows you to type to set the length of it.

DYNMODE is that box, that's just a floating version of the commandline, its informational, it does nothing to any command. Are you actually dimensioning?

If you want to share a DWG file that exhibits the problem for you, we'll gladly have a look for you. I'll also ask the admin to move your post to the correct folder if you want.

I was playing around with it more, and it only happens on stuff inside that big blue box property line. everything else seems to be fine. is this a bug or is it supposed to be happening?

Dimensioning is working fine here in your drawing around your property line, see attached.

oh my bad maybe I wasn't clear, I'm not talking about actual dim I'm talking about the little box that appears whenever you draw a line, the dynamic input box.

Hi,

I could see that in your drawing you have the visual style set to "wireframe". I assume that is what is causing the trouble. Try setting it to 2D wireframe by typing in the command "VS" and then press "2" and enter.

If you want the dynamic input then type in the command "DYNMODE" and set it to "3" or you could toggle on/off by using "F12".

yes indeed it is: once again, can you show us what you are talking about? Post a video or a series of screenshots so we can see what you see, this little white box that has you thrown for a loop.

Here is how to do screenshots https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027213/windows-10-open-snipping-tool-and-take-a-screenshot
Here is a free video recording tool from Autodesk https://knowledge.autodesk.com/search-result/caas/simplecontent/content/download-autodesk-screencast...

….

It's not the little white box, it's the lack of  the little white box when expected that has thrown them for a loop.  I don't have a solution, but just so you know they're not crazy, when I first tried drawing some Lines in their sample drawing, when I got inside the suspect boundary the dynamic input box did not appear for me, either.  But then somehow it got over it, and it hasn't happened in subsequent tries, so I don't have any idea how to analyze what's happening.
