.DWG file extension refuses to associate with Autocad.

Up until today, I had two installs of AutoCAD going; 2016 & 2018. This was because I had some custom stuff in 2016 I needed to refer to for setting up in 2018. Now I also have Vault 2018 set up as well. and that's the catalyst for the problem I am in.

Vault refused to open drawings in the new 2018 AutoCAD, even with the behavior set to "Latest Version" in vault options - very annoying. So, with that today was the day I could uninstall all the 2016 program and be left with just 2018.

Upon doing so AutoCAD 2018 lost the ability to associate with .DWG files. It will open them, but the choosing default program through:

Right-click and hitting open "Open With..."
Doing the same but navigating to the "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2018Acad.exe"
Going by the regedit.exe command line

all yield no results in getting AutoCAD to re-associate with .DWG. And to top it off now, when I look at Vault, the files don't show the typical icon for a .DWG and I can not open them because I get an error:

"no application is associated with the specified file for this operation"

I have tried:

Repairing, re-installing, then fully un-installing and re-installing AutoCAD AND Vault and did not take.

Running windows 7, 64 bit.

VAULT has a dedicated forum over here https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/vault/ct-p/2004

I think the Vault part of this will resolve itself once AutoCAD 2018 finally accepts that a .DWG is an AutoCAD file and holds its association. Still an AutoCAD problem.

Open 2018: open a file, pan around, save and close the file. Close 2018. DWG filetype is now associated with R2018 in WIndows unless you've set up WIndows Explorer to use an exe other than ACLAUNCHER.EXE (or AutoCAD DWG LAUNCHER) to open the file (not any variant of acad.exe like you did already).

If you open R2016, Windows will always use this always moving forward until you repeat the above.

Read all about it here https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/DWG-file...

Hope that helps.
