Dumbing down external references

I do some machine layout at my new job, and we have to use external references for ventilation. The issue that I'm running into is that these external reference models have such an obscene amount of detail that it takes such a long time to make even a simple adjustment. Is there any way to make these work a little better so my boss doesn't have to stand over my shoulder watching and waiting for something to move?

Golden opportunity to request for more powerful machines to deal with heavy xrefs.

Or you can try opening those xrefs clean them up, freeze layers you know you don't need to see and then do a save.

Now see if that increases the speed of referencing them in to work on.

Alternatively, depending on what Layer are involved in the excessive level of detail, you might be able to simply Freeze some of the Xref Layers in drawings in which they are Xref'd.  That way, with an appropriate VISRETAIN setting, you don't need to do anything more when you get an update of those drawings.  If you Freeze or delete Layers in those drawings themselves, you'll need to do it again when you get an update that contains stuff on all those Layers again.
