DTEXT to lines

I am new to AC and have autocad 2010 by autodesk. I need help turning DTEXT into lines. A local firedepartment needs a sign made and would like to cad it so a cnc machine can produce it. I typed in TEST in DTEXT, then next command was TXTEXP, screen shows that items were moved to Layer 0 which is what I am on, but the word disappeared, no letters or lines. Would appreciate detailed help on this if anyone has time.

Before you use TXTEXP, use command INSUNITS and put in 0

Try that and see.
