Does AutoCAD slow down as files get bigger?

I am curious if AutoCAD slows down as files get bigger, like the software itself can't process all the data or if it is more of a hardware issue. The company I work for started getting into point clouds recently and they make massive file sizes when a slice is brought into AutoCAD and it doesn't run very well. I just want to make sure the issue is hardware based or if the program just can't handle the information its trying to display.

Laptop spec that is having some issues:

i7-6700HQ

GTX 960M

16GB RAM

We are getting into files that are approaching 100 or more MB.

PointCloud files are HUGE, like SUPER HUGE, imagine you trying to keep track of a 3D model comprised of single dots. It's very demanding. Same as you drawing 2D with only dot hatch pattern, then EXPLODING all the hatches.

If you folks want to get into pointclouds regularly you most likely need to be using more capable software (REVIT with high-speed server based models) and hardware in the workstation class. You just can't speed up AutoCAD with point clouds by purchasing fater hardware.

Okay, good to know. I figured that would be the case, I just wanted to make sure before we go and buy new stuff just for it to not make a difference.
