Dimention Problem

Hello!! I am a technical High School student we have started to use AutoCAD but I have problem with it.

When I use Line command and insert the length of the line, for example 20. Then I go to dimension to show the length of the line It shows 20.000. I have checked and set the Drawing Units > Insertion Scale from Inches to millimeter (I need millimeter to draw)  but the second problem is eveytime I open a mew drawing page the Insertion Scale shows Inches... And even changing to millimeter doesn't solve the problem. When I insert the length it shows a x10.000 length.

Can you help me to solve this problem? Thank you so much.

Hi,

>> Then I go to dimension to show the length of the line It shows 20.000

from DDIM command >> select your used style >> Modify >> Primary Units >> Zero Suppression ( Leading and Trailing ) .

>> the second problem is eveytime I open a mew drawing page the Insertion Scale shows Inches.

this is happened because you're opening an already existing template  .dwt file . you can see them from Ctrl+N shortcut command . you can prepare your own template file then SAVE AS and change Files of type to *.dwt type and save it in the templates folder . Now you can by Ctrl+N use your own template.

1.  20 and 20.000 are the same -- it's just a matter of displayed precision.  Dimension Styles can show the measurements to whatever precision you prefer.  In the Dimension Style dialog box:

DimensionPrecision.PNG

But if you set it so that 20 is displayed without decimal places, then all distances in Dimensions of that Style will have no decimal places, so you may be misled about the real size of things, and you may not be aware of imprecisions in your drawing.  I suggest setting it to have some decimal places, but if you want 20.000 to show as just 20, you can suppress trailing zeroes, farther down in that same dialog box:

ZeroSuppression.PNG

For other purposes, such as the return from a DIST or LIST command, or length values shown in the Properties palette, you can have units displayed to whatever precision you prefer.  In the UNITS command dialog box:

UnitsPrecision.PNG

You can also suppress trailing 0's for those kinds of displayed values, by setting the DIMZIN System Variable to 8 or 12 [read about it in Help].

2.  That is a property of the drawing template on which a new drawing is based.  The new-drawing icon in the Quick Access Toolbar gets you the QNEW command, which just uses the default template file.  Find what the default template file is, in the OPTIONS dialog box:

TemplateDefault.PNG

and open that, change the setting, and save it [still as a template file, not a drawing file].  You can make drawing template files with different settings.  If you want to choose a template other than the default one, don't use that new-drawing icon in the Quick Access Toolbar, but pull down the big-A at upper left and pick the New item, or type in the NEW command, or Ctrl+N, and you can choose the template file you want.
