Dimension Layer Returns to Layer 0

Good day everyone!

I wonder if someone could help me determine what is causing an issue with my dimensioning?  I have created a layer that I am using for dimensions.  I also used DIMSTYLE to specify my preferences (see the pic).  I set the current layer to my dimension layer.  Whenever I create a dimension it will always change to Layer 0, and I must manually go back and change the layer, again setting it to current.  I don't know what is causing AutoCAD to make this change, and I am hoping one of the sleuths here might have a clue.  Many thanks in advance for any and all assistance ...

In AutoCAD type DIMLAYER.  Is that set to layer 0?

Thank you for your speedy assistance John.  I checked DIMLAYER and it is set to '0.'  I am unfamiliar with this command.  The Help I reviewed on it left me puzzled.  Here is what it says:  "Specifies a default layer for new dimensions. Find Type: String Saved in: Drawing Initial value: use current Values other than the "." (use current) value override the current layer (CLAYER)."

I wish the people who wrote that had to take a beating with a thousand wet noodles.  I changed the zero to a "." and that fixed my problem.  Would be wonderful to learn when, where, and how this value was set?  Or better yet, when, where and how to use it!?

Our plans have several overlays which require multiple
dimension layers for each group. Examples: Plan, Electrical,
Structural. Old school would be to set the layer, apply the
dimension, and reset the layer when finished. Now instead
of setting the layer, set the DIMLAYER at the beginning and
forget the reset.
