Deleting Hatch

While deleting a hatch in a dwg, the lines enclosing the hatch delete as well.  Why?

Also, when I add a hatch to an enclosed area, the enclosure lines change to whatever layer I am in.

The Hatch pattern is Associative, making it "tied to" its bounding object(s).  Pick it and in Properties, see that it and its bounding objects are all listed:

Pick on the Hatch (1) to get the properties of it by itself, and change it to be non-Associative:

To have Hatches not be Associative to begin with, set the HPASSOC System Variable to 0.

1. Check the value of PICKSTYLE, if it is set to 2 or 3 when you select the hatch you are also selecting the boundary. 0 or 1 retains the boundary because it is not being selected. What Kent says above will not apply if PICKSTYLE = 0 or 1

2. I suspect HPBOUNDRETAIN is set to 1. When it is set to 1, a boundary is *created* along with the hatch (it's not changing your boundary). When set to 0, no additional boundary is created.

under Hatch > seTtings you can specify the Layer you want the Hatch to be created:
