Creating an alignment on top of a grading changes the grading surface

I have a repetitive problem where the auto-generated grading surface changes when I create an alignment on top of the grading. I have closed feature lines from which I created an infill grading. The grading is is part of a site that is separate from any other gradings, and the grading is set for automatic surface creation. When I create the alignment through the grading so I can produce profiles and cross-sections, the grading surface is changed and has a zero elevation point, which throws the whole thing off. Is there a reason why creating an alignment would change the surface?
