creating a boundary polyline using x-ref

I'm certain in the past I have been able to do a boundary polyline using x-ref entities. I am not able to do them in 2016, i get "A Closed Boundary Cannot Be Determined". is there a setting or something that contols this? is it not possible to do?

Hi,

I tried it, AutoCAD 2016 SP1 ... worked well.

And no, I would not know a system variable, which could avoid searching through the XRef (as long as you don't use a manual selection for boundary, which does not include the XRef).

Verify all the line work in the xrefis closed and on the same plane. If a line has a different z value than the others then you cannot create a boundary.

Boundary worked fine in the x-ref'd file, and worked in other drawings that I x-ref'd, so I just started a new drawing and inserted the x-ref and it works fine. must have been a glitch in the other drawing file.
