Copy Command HARD Crash

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem with the Copy command.

About once a week AutoCAD will have a HARD crash when I invoke the plain old COPY Command (NOT copy/paste).

I mean HARD. All AutoCAD windows and palettes freeze.

Keyboard entry, not Ribbon or old toolbar icon click.
Pickfirst ON, with something usually picked, one item or many.

Properties, Layers, and Tool Palettes open.
Blocks, Design Center, and Xref Palettes open but minimized.

I know it's the Copy command because immediately nothing happens. Cursor disappears (and will not return) in all AutoCAD windows and palettes, but other programs are OK.
Task Manager shows complete (95%) memory consumption by AutoCAD, with very High Power usage, and actively fluctuating, as if it is working on it. Windows taskbar tabs show spinning circle on each AutoCAD tab.

I have even taken lunch and come back after an hour, and it is still locked up.

There is no pop-up saying "oops, can't continue", or "Fatal Error," etc.

No option to send in an error report.

All I can do is End Task and hope I did not lose much work (autosave set for 9 minutes).

I am using vanilla AutoCAD 2020. All day every day, for 25+ years. Hardware Acceleration ON (Off not an option).

Outlook, Bluebeam, and a few Folders open, usually. Maybe 3-4 .dwg files open.

Windows 10. Dell 5820 Tower, 32G RAM, 4 core Xeon processors. Two 28" monitors.

HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE?

Why not try to identify and elimi9nate the reason for the crash?
Post a screenshot of your 2020's ABOUT command (you need to be at 2020.1.3 version), and for the next few weeks or month use RECOVER command to open all of your files (RECOVERALL if they contain XREFs) and see if you can stop it from happening.

Other ways to fix files are listed here https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/AutoCA...

Also turn off hardware acceleration in GRAPHICSCONFIG command if turning off LINESMOOTHING and LINEFADING variables offers no relief.

I figured someone would say that about Hardware Acceleration.
I will grudgingly try it.

For a while.

Leaving Linesmoothing on, and Linefading is already OFF.

I'm in Version 2020.1.2.

I generally open AutoCAD by directly clicking a file name in a folder. Same when acad is already open.

Is there a better way to use Recover to open a file than starting acad and going thru the Program Icon menu?

Audit record of file in question attached.

Turn off LINESMOOTHING first, doesn't matter right now what you feel needs to be on, we are trying to find issues with your setup.

RECOVER command from inside the program is the best approach or now to resolve any issued, again this is for testing for a short term not forever so you can change for a while too. QSAVE right after RECOVER (or RECOVERALL if the file contains XREFs) to ensure errors are saved.

Do this too: get in the habit for the shortterm to run -PURGE command (there is a dash in the name) with the REGAPPS option to clean up your files.

Never done the Regapps option on -purge.
(I run dialog box purge frequently)

See attached notepad file (same one) for the -purge record. Did not purge anything.

WTH are all those that came up? Any possible culprits?

Where might they have come from?

Leaving for the weekend.

Thanks for the help (not liking the look of decellerated hardware).

Did not change the other yet.

Have a nice weekend!

Well, it happened again!!!!@!

Keyed "c" for copy, selected a point, then NOTHING.

Had Hardware acceleration OFF.

Linesmoothing was ON.

Starting back up, linesmoothing is now OFF, and Hardware acceleration is back ON.

I have attached a screen shot of the Details tab of Task Manager during crash and after re-start, if that is of interest.

Also a record of the Regapps that are running in the re-opened drawing file, none purged.

What are these, and where do they come from?

So, after what turns out to be 3 Years of dealing with the "No Selection" issue (see other forum thread), plus this HARD crash on the plain old "copy" command, I upgraded to AutoCAD version 2022 a few weeks ago.
Neither issue went away.
Then I got a completely NEW computer.

Dell Precision 5280 Tower, 32G Ram, Windows 10, NDIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 video card, driver up-to-date.

Installed only AutoCAD vanilla 2022 with all current patches and updates. Factory Design Suite available, but not installed.

One week old.

"No selection" issue has not happened yet.

Plain keyboard "c" for copy command > HARD crash today, as described in original post.

I forced a .dmp file via Task Manager, but it is almost 8GB in size, and I have no idea how to interpret it.

Turning OFF Linesmoothing and Linefading.

Leaving Hardware acceleration ON.

I have just removed all but simple "defun:c" type keyboard command combinations (za = zoom all) from my acaddoc.lsp file - I used to have several more complex routines copied from cadalyst or other places in there, but they are out for now. I call it my acad.pgp file on steroids.

@pendean, That acaddoc.lsp file has code for doing the regapp removal thing, so it is run at the startup of every file.

Can I add code to run Recover at every dwg startup?

I will wait to see if / when the copy command crash happens again.

COPY command does not crash any workstation in our offices in R2020-2021-2022 so far. Sorry, I still think you have a problem inherit in either how you call COPY command or your DWG files.

Housekeeping item: Have you installed the 2022.1.1 Update yet? ABOUT command will confirm what you have installed. If not, get it from your Autodesk Account Page here https://manage.autodesk.com/cep/#products-services/updates
Restart your PC afterwards.

Set GFXDX12 variable to 0 (that's a zero) then restart AutoCAD/LT2022 may be something to try, but since your issue is literally limited to one single command's execution, I doubt it will do much.

Feel free to start a support ticket through your subscription portal as explained here https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/account-management/users-software/support-options#:~....

Added recover command to my startup routine.

Got the update.

Changed the gfxdx12 thing to zero.

I had two concurrent Customer Service cases going, both with Volker Cocco.

I would name my next kid after him, if there was going to be one.
I.T. would not let him in to poke around in my settings, so he could not proceed.

Is there a way to force autocad to halt/pause/ignore all commands until autosave finishes running?

Thanks for the quick reply.
