Connecting to Enterprise GIS Data

Connecting to Enterprise GIS Data

Hello all,

I'm wondering if any one can point me to the recommended way to connect to an Enterprise GIS database using AutoCAD. We have a SQL database enabled as an enterprise geodatabase (SDE) through esri's ArcGIS technology.

Specs

SQL 2014

ArcGIS (any version) We can go back as far as 10.3.1

AutoCAD 2017

Using the Data panel, we are having zero luck connecting either with an Add ArcGIS or add ArcSDE connection. Both appear to want you to make the connection with an SDE service, which hasn't been supported by esri sinse ArcGIS version 10.2. We have had luck using a SQL Server Spatial Connection, but I'm unclear as to why the other connection types wouldn't work. I'm struggling to understand what the recommended approach is for more modern versions of ArcGIS enabled databases. Is anyone connecting to these types of databases and can share a recommended approach?

Thanks you,

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

According to this article, AutoCAD Map does not support ArcGIS 10.3.1. I suspect that connecting it to plain AutoCAD will also not work.

Hi John,

Thanks for the response. I appreciate you sharing the article with the versioning. It appears to me that no matter what release of AutoCAD we upgrade to, it will only support connecting to ESRI ArcSDE 10.2. Is there a reason that that type of connection has basically stopped at 10.2? Esri is many versions beyond 10.2 now. It appears to me that AutoCAD basically stopped supporting that type of connection once ESRI stopped using the SDE service in favor of direct connects. We will continue to explore other options to direct connect, probably using the SQL Server Spatial connection.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi @Anonymous,

I am afraid that is the only data I found regarding the connection to ESRI. If I run across more I will come back and post.
