Complex linetype (.lin) file – some definitions load, others fail with “Invalid number or bad continuation”

Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue loading a custom .lin file with complex linetypes in AutoCAD, and I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I’ve created a single .lin file containing numerous complex linetypes with embedded text (utilities, QL variants, dashed versions, etc.). The strange part is that some of the linetypes load perfectly, while others fail during import with errors like:

• “Invalid number or bad continuation”

What’s confusing is that the linetypes that fail appear to be structured the same way as the ones that load successfully.

What I have tried so far:

• Built the .lin file manually in Notepad (not exported from other software)

• Confirmed all linetype names are unique

• Followed Autodesk’s guide on complex linetypes

• Simplified dash patterns and spacing values

• Confirmed the referenced text style (STANDARD) exists in the drawing

Any insight would be really appreciated. I feel like I’m missing something subtle in the way AutoCAD parses these.

I replaced all the , space with just , without the space and now they all work:

That was it! Removing the spaces after the commas resolved the issue. All linetypes now load correctly in AutoCAD without errors.
