combining mesh elements

I am working on a structure, after laser scanning of the monument, due to fine architectural detailing, the structure was divided into too many very fine mesh elements which do not contribute in structural analysis at all, now i want to import it to an analysis software, and due to its large size, i am facing problem in exporting, as it is taking a lot of time.

Now even after exporting due to meshed surfaces with an angle <5 degree between the edges, meshing quality is degrading.

The only solution which seems possible is to combine meshed elements into a single surface.

How to get that done?

Hi and welcome to AutoDesk Forum,

you can merge faces into a single face by using MESHMERGE command, try to use it.

Hi,

>> the structure was divided into too many very fine mesh elements

The drawing only contains 3D-Solids as well as block-insertions.

I don't see any mesh objects.

Am I missing something?

I am sorry, it was the 3D elements that needs to be combined. As I am not allowed to reveal complete geometry on social forums its a bit difficult to understand.

If you look closely you will find fine stepping. and each surface in further divided diagonally. Which makes it difficult to mesh without distorting the geometry.

hi @Anonymous,

If I understood wright, when you say "mesh" you refer to the surface of your 3d solids not actual mesh objects.. (because meshes are different types of 3d objects in Autocad)

And what you want is to decrease the number of faces by removing the triangulation,  so that you can manipulate faces mor easily..

So what you need is to press ctl+click on the diagonal edge you want to remove then delete.. (I'm using 2016) (Check both windows in the attached file)

Some times it will refuse to delete that edge, that's when the faces on both sides of the edge are not co-planar..

I don't know of an automatic way to do this in Autocad unfortunately.. (3d's max will be a much more suited product for these operations in my opinion)

-----

Another suggestion would be to model your own simplified model for struct. analysis without cornices or artwork..

Or to create a simple 3d model in front of the original intersecting a bit with it ind subtract it from the original simplifying things ..

Regards..
