Very new to AutoCad.  I am working on an existing drawing that has a revised date of 4/27/10 on it.  It looks like that is on a layer will the actual lines of the building so I can't figure out how to delete it.  I created a layer to do flooring type and that date is showing on my drawing.  How can I change that date to show correctly on my layer?

double-click on it, the program will open the correct editor for you to use.

When I do that it says there is a file lock already on the drawing and I can't do anything.

File lock? That's an IT issue.
Or a locked layer you need to just unlock in LAYER command?

Sounds like the text you want to edit is in another drawing that is being referenced into that drawing. Maybe you also have that drawing open at the same time or someone else has it open. Click on the text and look at the properties palette. Does it say its an xref?  If so it should also tell you the drawing name and location in the palette.

When I click on that date, it highlights the date and all of the building lines. And the ribbon at the top changes to tell me that this is an external reference.

So it's another drawing being referenced in. After clicking on it and it highlights right click and in the menu select open xref or select open reference on the ribbon.  If it says the file is locked either you have it open or if you are on a network with other people someone else has the drawing open.  Either way you need to open that drawing and change the text there.
